Baby waking every 40 minutes during the night.

Hi, my son is nearly 10 months old and for almost a week now he is waking every 40 minutes. He cries and as soon as you pick him up he goes back to sleep but then will wake again. He doesn't want feeding and his nappies are fine.

He normally starts his day at 630, and can have 1 hour total nap time until we settle him for the night at 8/9.

He's never been a great sleeper, but every 40 minutes is hard work

Anyone got any advice or tips to help?

Thanks x

Can it be teething or earache? Something is bothering him and unfortunately you have to go down a list of things and check them off.

I have done, he seems to settle straight away when I pick him up, but as soon as I put him down again he cries.

It could just be crying for attention and he’s used to you going into him, baby sleep cycles are about 45 minutes. Our little boy was like this around 6 months and it was exhausting. Depends on what you’re comfortable with but started to just leave him, we used the Ferber method of sleep training and eventually (after one very long night of him crying for around an hour) he stopped doing it. From about 7 months he’s slept all the way through with the odd few nights where he’s teething or got a cold and that disturbs him, but with that we go in, check him, give him a cuddle then tell him it’s sleep time before putting him back down and that seems to work a treat now. Hope you find a solution x

Hi, Could it be separation anxiety? Maybe a regression. Have they recently transitioned from 2 periods of sleep to one sleep? Also at 10months my daughter sometimes cries out and does this in her sleep, maybe leave just for a minute to check, I always jump up and she's still sleeping . I've just gone through this and thought it could be one of them. She is now slightly better 🙈. I'm debating trying the no cry method, but been too tired to read the book 🙈. Hope things settle soon x

It may be he has been in his own room for a week now. When he wakes up he instantly sits up in his cot while crying and just seems to get louder if I leave him to try settle himself so end up rushing in to get him xx

Hi, that does sound tough for both of you. I would say he’s probably not quite ready to be in his own room yet. You might find it less exhausting to have him nearby and transition him a little slower to a separate room perhaps. Only you know what gives you both a better night’s sleep, I learnt the hard way not to worry too much about following fixed rules about sleeping and eating for babies, especially while they are still so young.

Hi,

It is not clear, how many naps a day does he have. How long are the wake times in the day? Waking up every 40 min sounds like the wake times are not long enough to create a good sleep pressure at night. But if the overall day nap is just 1 hour, then some wake times might be too long? In any case, at this age, 1 nap a day is not possible yet.
