Welsh name pronunciation

So we thought we had settled on our baby's name, we are both Welsh so having a Welsh name is very important to us. We want to call our boy Llewelyn, but shorten it to Llewy. How would you assume that Llewy should be pronounced? We want it to be like Louie but in Welsh the Ll sound is pronounced differently so I'm not sure now if it's going to work! Help!!

I’m from England and read it as the Louie pronunciation, it’ll be interesting to see what people from wales say 🤔😊 x

I read Llewy as Louie I am also welsh so I can’t see a issue with it not sure how it would be pronounced by anyone who doesn’t know welsh! Although my son has a Welsh name and I have to explain how to pronounce it all the time but I would never change it as it’s different.

Hope that helps xXx

That's how I think most people will pronounce it, I just love the pronunciation like Louie, but I know that when he goes to school everyone will pronounce it the same way as you!! In a pickle about it 😩 he's definitely Llewelyn, I love the name ❤️ Thanks lovely x

Hiya, I think it will be lovely. I had a grandfather and have a cousin named Llewelyn. Llew for short is common in Wales and for those that aren't Welsh, they just tend to pronounce it as 'Lou' so I guess Llewy would be as others have said- Louie or if you're Welsh, you'd pronouce it with the correct 'Ll' sound. 😀

My partner's grandad was Llewelyn and everyone called him Lou, so I think you might be right. Thanks so much 👍🏼

My Hubby has that name as his middle name and he pronounces it with a K like KLlewelyn, if that makes sense. With a kinda roll of the tongue. He was born in Carmarthen xx
