Getting a scan

Hi ladies!

I am 5 weeks pregnant and I am still a little bit in shock about all this. I can’t entirely believe it yet. I got the first appointment with the midwife yesterday and she took some blood and urine samples but I didn’t get a scan. I want to have one because I had some cramps last week but she told me that normal. It’s there any way I can get a scan before the 12 weeks one? I am not from UK only being here for 10 months now and I don’t know how the whole system works.

Thank you for your help :)

At 5 weeks there's not much to see and you would probably leave more worried. Unless there's bleeding or bad cramps then there is no reason for you to be sent for a scan.

Mild cramping is normal for your gestation.

You can pay privately if you wanted to though, there are companies all over the uk that will do this for you x

You would have to pay privately but I would at least wait until 6 probably even 7/8 weeks.

Congratulations though xx

I had early bleeding at 6 and 9 weeks, for that reason I was offered scans. At 6 weeks baby looked like a sesame seed in a sea of black, with a tiny flicker for the heartbeat. At 9 weeks there was a clear outline of a growing baby (much to my partner’s surprise).

It’s hard not to worry but you really won’t see much at this point in your pregnancy. If you can wait a few more weeks you could search for somewhere that does scans and go privately before your 12 week scan on the nhs

I know how you feel completely. I was in total shock when I found out and couldnt bare the thought of waiting until 12 weeks. I did end up waiting and it was well worth it just to see a baby in my tummy that was alive! My advice to you is to pay privately if you really are desperate to see baby, but wait until at least 8 weeks as even at 8 weeks theh will literally just look like a small blob (my friend had a scan at 8 weeks which is how I know). As well as this.... take it easy for the next few weeks, first 12 weeks are the most important, rest as much as you can, drink plenty, take vitamin d supplement and folic acid tablets daily and dont over do it! I suffered badly with pains throughout my pregnancy and had a few urine infections along the way.... dont ignore the pain, as it may be something more serious. I had a lot of pain throughout, most was standard cramps or round ligament pain but obvsiouly others was the urine infection. good luck with your pregnancy xx

Thank you for your kind words!

I just booked a private scan this morning for September 14th that I will be 8 weeks and 6 days. So hopefully we will be able to see something. My 12 weeks will be around October 5th. I can’t wait that long. I need to start feeling like this is real 😅 and I probably won’t until I see it with my eyes. At least a small blob will do 😅

I am starting to throw up since tow days ago so it’s getting real to be honest 🙄😂 but I will do the scan before I go nuts.

Thank you 😊
