Dental anaesthetic during pregnancy

Hello, I’m 16 weeks pregnant and I need to have a crown fitted which will require a dental anaesthetic. Is it safe? Have any of you had any dental work done when pregnant?

Hi, you should definitely double check and confirm that with your dentist they would be able to advise if you can have the anaesthetic when pregnant. I believe you can there is just different one (might be more expensive) that can be used when you pregnant, but as I said confirm with dentist

Thank you. My dentist seem to think it’s ok but I’m still worried.

I feel bad as I did not know I was pregnant and needed a root canal done and had it done. But when later I spoke to my dentist she said it's totally fine.

Call up the surgery and ask for an advise!

Thanks. My dentist says it’s ok too but I just feel really guilty. I guess it’s better to have it done rather than wait longer.

This might be a silly comment but have you questioned if they really need to give you an anaesthetic at all? I’ve not had a crown but I’ve had other dental work done without anaesthetic - I’m terrified of needles so happened to ask if I really needed it one time and asked ‘how painful would it be?’ The dentist said that it was standard practice to offer anaesthetic because people expect it and most people are scared, but said I didn’t really need it. He was right, I didn’t hurt at all. But of course if your situation is different and it’s going to really hurt then ignore me 😂

He would have to file a tooth down which is very painful. I could try and do it with a spray on my gum only rather than an injection but I don’t think it will be bearable. It’s just annoying as I didn’t have any dental work for years and it had to come up now. I have a big filling in that tooth so he said it’s better to crown it. I’m having another chat with him about options.

Ah ok, with mine they did file my tooth but not very much and it was a small cap rather than a full crown so wouldn’t have been deep.

That’s such a shame re having to get dental work after so long - but maybe it’s the pregnancy that’s brought up the issue? Teeth and bones get weaker due to baby taking nutrients.

Dentist wouldn’t give you something that isn’t safe so go with what you need - no point suffering. Sounds like you’re doing everything you can by talking to him about the options.

Yes and I’m thinking if the decay gets worse and I get an infection then the situation will be even worse and might end up with a root canal so maybe I just need to get it sorted.
