Polyhydramnios

I had a scan at 35 weeks showing that everything was to expected. At 37 weeks I have had a second scan which is now showing increased amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios).

What are the experiences that some of you may have had with polyhydramnios.?

I had a scan at 32 weeks which showed normal fluid and now my scan at 36 weeks has showed increased fluid. I saw a consultant team afterwards as I have gestational diabetes, which could explain it, but they have said the baby will have a tube passed through it’s nose when born to check it goes into its stomach before I can feed it, in case there is a blockage and now have a specialist scan booked for next week to check that their isn’t a problem with the baby. Have you got anything further booked in?

Thanks for the reply! The only follow up they have asked is for me to have a follow up of my glucose levels. I havent had a problem with diabities in my pregnancy but i dont know if it would arise now.

No one has mentioned anything about a scan or what would happen after the birth so it has made me feel abit nervous of what is to be expected.

I think it’s completely natural to feel nervous, this is my second pregnancy and my bump has always been quite big but everyone said that’s to be expected! With my first pregnancy I wasn’t tested until 28 weeks due to family history and this time around at 16 weeks. I have had growth scans at 28, 32 and 36 weeks due to the diabetes so I think that’s why they are being extra careful and doing another one before deciding when to induce me. You could always call your hospital and speak to someone about it to put your mind at rest.

I had most of my pregnancy care abroad and as a routine check i had gestional diabities tested which all came clear and baby isnt big or hasnt shown any problems it has been a very good pregnancy. Thats why its came as a shock to me and its not anything known. Its the first i have heard of it.

Oh ok, it’s the first time I have too but when they did my earlier growth scans they said they measure the fluid and told me the normal ranges, but I didn’t know the implications as it has been fine until yesterday! I spoke to a specialist midwife today who booked me in for the scan to check baby and she explained the possible reassigns for it so it’s not as scary but whilst making you aware of the potential risks. I have read that in most cases it’s unexplained, just one of those things, which isn’t very helpful when it’s happening to you, I know.

Definitely agree with you. I was feeling ok with time coming closer but if waters break first and a possibility of cord prolapse has just worried me but will definitely be in contact with someone x

I feel exactly the same and we have a 30 minute drive to the hospital, I have been induced before and am more than happy to be induced in hospital again rather than take the risk of going into labour at home. The midwife I spoke to was very helpful so I hope you have the same experience

Yea i am also that far away from the hospital but i have also been advised to call an ambulance if my waters break before any contractions. I will also ask about being induced seems like that would be more controlled x

Hello, I am just about at 33 weeks and found out 2 weeks ago that I have Polyhydramnios, which was detected by chance. I have already had 2 glucose tests for diabetes, (which both came back negative) and have now been booked in for a third. I had an ultrasound yesterday, which showed twice the amniotic fluid considered normal, otherwise growth size and flow rates to the baby looked normal. I have another scan next week to check all organs again (same process as the 20 week check up) in addition to a meeting with the birthing Dr. All of these tests and follow up meetings are making me really nervous that something is not right, especially without the diabetes connection. I’m pleased to hear that your midwives haven’t made such a big fuss about it. I live in Denmark, and it is really stressing me out. This is our first and I am 36. My husband is also really tall, so I am hoping to be in the idiopathic older mum with big baby group! I just desperately want to hear that women have had this diagnosis and everything turned out to be normal.

Hello. I also went through the same things diabities check and a thorough scan also blood tests. Mine were also cleAr. All they said was that sometimes there isnt a reason for the extra fluid. So it doesnt actually always mean there is a problem with the baby.

You only have a little time left try not to stress about it i know this isnt easy 😘

Did anything become of this - I am in the same boat as you at the moment (I have two months left now) and I am terrified something will be wrong with my baby

Hello. I had my baby, waters broke at home and i had been shown the recovery position to get into when waters broke. There was alot of water but my baby was born normally with no problems.

Thank you for a reply! I have another scan in two weeks and an appointment to speak to a consultant about it having excess fluid, I don't have diabetes as i have been tested, they also scanned me again and the baby is at perfect weight/ scale. So they don't know why I have more fluid. I am just scared in case something is wrong - they would have picked up on this on the scan if that was the case don't you think? Just to put my mind at rest - my appointment in two weeks is just to check up on things you think?

Yes they checked me for diabities but it was clear. I also had a detailed scan but that came clear aswell. Sometimes the fluid can happen and there is no actual reason for it!

Try not to worry, if your scans and stuff are all ok i wouldnt worry so much.

It is scary i know exactly how you feel but honestly try and make the most of your last 2 months x

Thank you - I will try, apart from this I have had a wonderful pregnancy and there is always just something in the back of my mind saying that it cant go all smoothly like this - something has to give - but I love being pregnant - more so giving birth to my baby boy x

I know how you feel it was my first pregnancy and i had no problems at all up until the 35th week where i found out about the excess fluid.

She was born normally and healthy.

Have they said anythinbf about when baby is born and having a tube put down.?

Yes they mentioned that the baby may need a tube put in place to see if my baby is swallowing ok as that could be a reason. its my first aswell x

Yes we had tge tube done to but there was no problem at all with her swallowing x

Hello I have the same condition. Diagnosed at 34 weeks and now 36.2. I am going in to hospital twice a week for monitoring and have an extra scan on the 29th November when I will be 37.5.

I wondered if you had any physical struggles. My left leg is constantly swollen but so severe that I am struggling to walk on it and stand. I don’t feel like I can continue for another 4 weeks as it is getting worse each day.
