Hi All.

Any ideas of what to do if paracetamol or teething gel or teething powder isn’t giving relief from teething pain? My LO is very unsettled and isn’t eating well and refusing milk or any liquid altogether. Any thoughts please?

Thanks xx

Our boy started teething at 9 weeks. He's nearly 13 weeks now. We use the powder in the morning and gel and Calpol together throughout the day which seems to settle him. Have you tried teething toys and putting them in the fridge so they're cool? That works too x

Yes. We are trying everything you mentioned above but he only settles down for an hour or so after giving him ibuprofen and the starts crying again. Dentinox gel works for 20 mins or so and he starts crying again. He isn’t eating anything. Refuses to drink more than 3oz at one time.

His throat sounds sore because of crying out loud constantly.

I am sure this is just a phase but unsure of how long this will last

Thanks xx

Just ideas. If he sounds like his throat is sore have you checked he hasn't got tonsilitis? Have you tried getting milk and water in him using a Calpol syringe? Making it a game? Distraction with toys/going to look at things? Some people swear by Amber necklaces/anklets, I think it worked for my son when we used one. Good luck, trust your mummy instinct and seek professional help from a Health Visitor or GP if it goes on too long. X

Thanks. No tonsillitis. His sore throat sound is result of his non stop crying out loud. Haven’t tried calpol syringe for milk. But tried distracting and all sorts of things. He now has little ulcers on tongue too so has lost his appetite. Just struggling to keep his energy levels going. Will try the amber bracelet. Only found out yesterday. Thanks for the advice xx

Okay you can use paracetamol every 6 hours with ibruprofen in between. Also my friend said she used organic teething powder from boots and she never had any problems.

Oh!!! I didn’t know you could give paracetamol and ibuprofen. Both of them say not to exceed more than 4 doses in 24hrs. So we either give him calpol or ibuprofen. Thanks xx

Yes they are different types of pain relief which inturn work differently.

My 16 month old is currently battling with the dreaded molars! I found anbesol liquid available OTC is fantastic. Instantly soothes her which is good just before bed as she falls asleep before the pain kicks in again. Frozen banana during the day helps for a bit. I cut them into sticks and wrap one end in tin foil so it’s comfortable for her to hold. Teething powders didn’t do anything for us too.good luck! Xx

Thanks. Do you have to rub anbesol liquid on gums?

My boy is not holding any food or not letting us feed him anything. When he is asleep, we feed him milk which he refuses after having about 3oz. Never seen him this distressed.

Bless him, yeah it’s pretty dire. how old is he? There is teething and pre teething when babies are less than six months old and their teeth start to align in the gums . My daughter started pre teething at 4 months and her first tooth cane through at 8 months. She also refuses food but she makes up for it when the tooth has broken through. The pain never lasts long normally. Her pre teething lasted for about three weeks and it takes her about a week nowadays to cut a tooth when suddenly she’s a happy little squidge again. The molars however have been pretty nasty and she’s struggling with red raw nappy rash and ear ache that only calpol eases. You dab the anbesol on with a cotton bud.

Keep reminding yourself that this will pass! It doesn’t last forever!

Amber anklet. 100% worked for my LG. Will be buying one for my LB soon

Try slices of cucumber, it’s cool and in the fridge it’s meant to help to sooth gums.
