oesophagal atresia.

Hi guys.. just wondered if any of you have had babies born with this?

We had a 20 week scan on Monday where we saw the baby drinking and a full bladder etc. but the sonographer needed to see a full tummy.. unfortunately baby wasn't playing ball! So we went back in on Wednesday where again- no full tummy :-( this time we have been referred to Southamptons Fetal Medicine hospital for another scan to see if baby is just playing up or if he has 'oesophagal atresia'

Really worried, i'm a first time mummy so i have been reading google (i know, i shouldn't!) but baby has no other signs of this i.e. all fluid around him is normal levels.

I've also read that once he's born he will be taken straight to SCBU for an operation. Definitely not sure how i'm feeling about this!

So, has anyone been through it or been to the fetal medicine hospital and everything been okay?

My nephew had something similar which wasn't picked up till he was 2 days old.

He had an operation, has a small scar under his arm and is a perfectly happy 1 year old. Is amazing what they can do.

Was a scary time as we didn't know it was coming, but if your baby does have it, you are forewarned and the medical team will be ready to deal with it x

thanks for your reply :) just reassuring knowing that its not as 'uncommon' as we thought it was :-) will let you know the outcome Tuesday x

We discovered just how uncommon it was!

My nephews case was really complicated but he's absolutely fine and there were 3 other babies on the ward too.

Fingers crossed for you for Tuesday but if it isn't the news you wanted, at least you know they deal with it a lot.

Any news? X

Hi sorry i didn't update! Well we travelled all the way to Southampton from Dorset to get there for the scan and what do we see right away?! a full tummy! no concerns for this little man and the doctor couldn't understand why we were sent there?! So all that worry for nothing, now i can get back to enjoying this pregnancy before the next trimester kicks in..x
