Im 13 weeks pregnant with my first child and I have heard that I can only use semi permanent dyes. Is that true or can I use permanent ones?

I'm pretty sure you can use any hair dye

I had trip to the hairdressers at 36 weeks for full head of highlights ;-)

I used permanent 3 times (bright red colour, looked like a fire engine and did all of them in my bathroom) when pregnant on my son, he's nearly 3 and only ever been ill once and that was when he was visiting his preemie sis in hospital, he caught her bug.

Don't worry and put your hair what ever colour you want for however long you want it ;) xxx

I asked my midwife about colouring my hair & she said it's just an old wives tale! There is no problem with doing it, whether it's permanent, semi or highlights. Go for it! Xx

Chemicals can't get absorbed through the hair itself, only if they are left on the skin for some time. Tell your hairdresser you are pregnant and they can be extra careful. They may also have different dyes they can recommend as being 'safer', although as other people have commented I think it's all a bit of an old wives take and just people being really cautious. I had highlights done at 37 weeks (got to have good hair in hospital, plus you won't have time to do it for months after the baby's born!)

I second the above with the get if done before birth as def no time for it after and your hair more likely to fall out after birth, I just moult but some women I know have lost clumps :-( hormones eh, can be the bain of our lives! X

I think the only think to bear in mind is the fact that your skin is more sensitive during pregnancy. I had no experience using hair dye, but I noticed that my skin burned much more easily in sunlight x

I had full head permanent colour and highlights at 13 wks and 37 wks.no problems with my little one. This was by a salon not at home.

Just do a skin test first as ur skin reactions can completely change whilst pregnant, but I was told it is completely fine as long as u have no cuts or anything on ur head where the dye could seep in x

I was concerned about the same thing so I got in touch with my doctor. Who said it was fine for me to use permanent hair dye as the peroxide levels are not buggy enough to cause damage to your baby but with pregnancy everything changes and you may be sensitive to the dye x

I know this is a little late but I'm a hair dresser and on my third pregnancy so thought I'd get my 2 bit in Lol, don't worry it's completely safe, just make sure a skin test is done 24-48 hours prior to colouring. If you colour your hair at home their are instructions for skin tests, follow of to the letter. If you go to a salon and they don't automatically do a skin test go else where. All salon should do them but unfortunately some don't.
