Naming day ceremony..

I am personally not religious yet would like my daughter to legally have Godparents. Naming day ceremonies do just that however don't know of anyone who has had one or been to one.

I was wondering if anybody had had one or been to one? Would i need some form of official to perform the ceremony, is it an all day thing etc. I have googled before but all websites say different so i'd rather hear from experience :-)

Hi hun, my friend held a naming day ceremony for her little boy. Was a hall that they hired which I believe they contacted a humanist to come and hold the ceremony (bit like a wedding) the dad had a speech planned and there was a party in the same hall after the ceremony with a buffet. Ceremony maybe took 20 mins tops! Here is info I found for you below that seems like what had to happen at the ceremony I was at. Sorry,it is long! Xx

Hi, I dont know about england but the church of scotland do 'blessing ceremonies' which are basically like christenings but the child isn't asked to accept god etc so it's far less religious. I thought my husband would want to have a naming ceremony so I first looked into a humanist ceremony as I would class myself as a humanist but they charge quite a bit so looked into the blessing instead it sounded good to me as an atheist :)

Hiya... some very good friends of ours had naming ceremonies for both of their little ones. They asked all family and friends to contribute some meaningful words, lyrics,, poems etc and created a little booklet for them. Some of us read out our words and mum and dad wrote a blessing for the naming part. If you're not having a church christening you could do the ceremony anywhere that is special to you, outdoors, your home or parents homes. Good Luck with your decision and have a lovely ceremony.
