I have a friend who is HIV1 +ve and is expecting in 1 month. My question is: is it ok for her to breastfeed her baby?

Has your friend experience or suffered with any other complications during the pregnancy?

I'm sorry I cannot answer your question in more detail as I have or know of anyone who has experienced this but you could maybe try going onto the NHS website which may have further details.

I'm sure you friend would get all of the info needed from her midwife? I would think her condition would be spoken about in detail throughout her pregnancy xx

Hi,

I'm hoping your friend has a midwife and that all the appropriate people involved in her care are aware of your friend's health condition. HIV is unfortunately passed in breast milk as well as blood. To prevent baby from contracting the illness, the midwives and doctors need to know about her HIV status to ensure baby is delivered as safely as possible. I'm sure there must be organisations out there that support HIV mothers during pregnancy and birth. I would imagine her midwife would have given your friend all the relevant information and support. If this isn't the case your friend should visit her GP ASAP and discuss this with her. Good Luck and I hope everything goes well for your friend. Xx

As HIV is an immune system virus, the breastmilk would contain the disease and would most likely be passed to baby. Ur friend needs to speak to the midwifery team as they may need to put the baby on a paediatric alert list. My baby had to go on a low risk one due to a family history of a genetic iron disorder called haemochromatosis that I was diagnosed as being a carrier of but not symptomatic. Good luck to ur friend, hope she gets more info xx

I would of hoped tht ur friends midwife and her wud of already had this conversation as its quite a big thing

.I am sure ur friends midwife wud b aware of the situation and hopefully the relevant arrangements will bade so tht both mother and baby are happy x

I believe that the health professionals will be in better position to advise her on what is good for her and the baby, not you nor us. My advice is for her to seek such advice from them, cheers!
