My GP told me that omeprazole dont work after taking them for 10 years . Stopped a few days ago and my stomach feels terrible. Could this be cold turkey.

Omeprazole
Not sure you are on the right forum, but -
You shouldn’t just stop them like that -you need to wean off them more slowly, otherwise you suffer as you have.
Your GP should have been aware of that.
see this link from another recent post about another PPI -
Strikes me as a bit of a generalisation and it isn't entirely true. They don't work for about a third of patients, they cause adverse effects for about a third and they work for the rest. 1 out of 3 isn't that bad ...
But it is a bit late to tell you after 10 years and if they DO work for you and you stop them suddenly you are likely to develop rebound acid production which can be very uncomfortable.
I have been on for 25 years and won't ever be able to stop as have many stomach problems.
I’ve been on them for 13 years. My GP told me that if I was to come off them I must be weaned off them gently or else I’m likely to get an acid rebound reaction. So perhaps that’s what you’ve started to experience.
you cannot just stop omozrapol you have to wean yourself off. after taking it for 2 years it took me 6 month to wean off and i am now ok. check google how to wean off
I have been in them for number of years no problems x
I have been on them for over 15 years now and never been told that by GP or consultant! x
That’s interesting I’ve been on some form of Omeprazole for over 20 years. Initially was started at 20mg 2x per day and after a time was increased to 40mg 2x/d. If I miss a dose I get severe heartburn and laryngospasm . I have a large sliding hiatal hernia and GERD.
Maybe, over time, the body adjusts to a specific medication. I was initially started on Prilosec in the mid ‘90s. After a couple of years my symptoms started to worsen and was prescribed Nexium. That got me back under control, for about a year. He tried Protonix, that made matters worse, Prevacid wasn’t much better. Zegerid worked best. Was on that until about 5 years ago when insurance stopped covering it. So, returned to plain Omeprazole and once in blue moon when I eat hot salsa I’ll take 1/2 tsp of sodium bicarb in water to combat the resulting heartburn.
Interesting tidbit I learned over the years:
Prilosec contains both isomers of the compound and is called Omeprazole. Nexium only contains one isomer, of that same compound-that rotates the plane of polarized light to the left or couner-clockwise and is given a different name, begins with ‘es’ I think. Supposedly this can make it more effective (proven?). Zegerid? Nothing more than Prilosec with sodium bicarbonate added. Surprised they haven’t released another named drug that would be nothing more than Nexium with Na Bicarb😂.
