Flatulence!

I’ve been really good about cutting out the carbs and been using beans of various kinds instead. Only trouble is the gas! Not too pleasant for Himself or anyone downwind at the time. Please does anyone know of a way to counteract this, it can be quite embarrassing 🤭🙏

It is often due to starting with large quantities - if you introduce them slowly your gut has more time to get used to them and the microbiome changes to cope. Also how you prepare them can help.

Probably the most common suggestion is to soak dried beens overnight and discard the soaking water at regular intervals. And if you use tinned beans - rinse them thoroughly too.

Thanks for the links. Think you’re right that I probably haven’t adjusted to them yet. I’m a bit all or nothing!

I was just wondering if beans are actually very low in carbs

SnazzyD profile image
SnazzyD in reply to Koalajane

No they are not particularly low carb so it depends how many one eats Just got some tins here:

Green lentils in water 400g can - per 1/2 can 15.4g

Haricot beans in water - 1/2 can 16.1g

Adzuki beans in water - 1/2 can 19.1g

in reply to Koalajane

I think the point is that although they're not very low carb, they're not refined and processed either so preferable to my former and much loved diet of white stuff especially soft bread with loads of butter!

Thanks, I am always interested in carb content as I need to know for my type 2 diabetes

What else do you take? I had to give up Adcal because it had an explosive effect on me.

PMRpro profile image

PPIs such as omeprazole also have a similar effect on some people. My husband almost exploded with both of them!

I have the same problem with lansoprazole, not very pleasant 🤔😬

Took it for 10 weeks but wish that I had given it up immediately. Vile stuff! My body hated it.

I had to give up Omeprezole for the same reason.

in reply to Seacat30

I do take Adcal and they affected me initially but then settled down. I could fly a hot air balloon on beans!

I am also finding that Adcal is giving me wind especially in the evening I seem ok with the morning dose but if I take it after my evening meal it’s awful! I have been taking it for 5years but it’s only in the last 4 months that this is happening.

Have you spoken to doctor about it? And have you added in any other tablets at same time?

Gallagher1a profile image
Gallagher1a in reply to DorsetLady

Hi ,no I haven’t spoken to the doctor to be honest they don’t seem interested and it’s very difficult to get an appointment these days .l did try to speak to them about seeing a rheumatologist because I am really stuck on my steroid reduction, they told me to ring direct to the hospital and I was told my rheumatologist had left the hospital 3years ago ! I don’t know if my Docters knew this because when I was trying to get a Covid jab at the start of the pandemic they said that you could only get it early (there was a lot of younger people than me having it at the time ) if you rheumatologist sent them a letter ! I feel that I am paddling my own canoe so to speak ,my partner has been diagnosed with arthritis and is at a different hospital in my area and has had much better help and advice ,helpline phone numbers etc ,it makes me think that maybe arthritis is a better understood ailment than PMR so gets more help .

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Gallagher1a

By arthritis do you mean an inflammatory arthritis, like rheumatoid? If so - you are probably right since that is their bread and butter and there is a choice of suitable medications to try so they see a lot more. They are always keen to refer PMR back to the GP for ongoing care too.

If your rheumy has gone your case should have been assigned to another team - but it might also be an opportunity to get your GP to refer you to your partner's team? Rheumatology helplines are rheumatology helplines - doesn't matter if it is PMR. But maybe we aren't considered worthy of such support.

Gallagher1a profile image
Gallagher1a in reply to PMRpro

Yes he has psoriasis arthritis and is on methotrexate which he is struggling with ,but I feel he has had more support and pastoral care ,when I mentioned this at the GPS they said they would write to Wrexham hospital and I haven’t heard anything from that day to this (about 4months ago ) I am considering going private ,but what will they say just try to get off the pred easier said than done .

You are probably considered as totally non-urgent so at the bottom of the pile - and N Wales IS a bit of a desert for doctors of any sort anyway!

Agree with PMRpro, think you need to do a bit more investigating with Rheumy Dept….unless you were officially referred back to GP by previous Rheumy you should still be on their books.

From an active member of the IBS forum, I would recommend simethicone. You shouldn't have any trouble finding it over the counter at the local chemist's

Could you replace some of the beans with nuts? And I'm sure it's true that you do get used to them. As a vegetarian of over 50 years, I get no such problem. I'm almost sad about that, having no chance of revenge on Him Indoors!

Add some grated ginger when you cook the beans. Also if starting with dried beans there is apparently a reason why they are presoaked and the soaking water poured off. I don't have the flatulence problem but it seems I can no longer tolerate beans or lentils so as a vegetarian, culinary life hasn't been as interesting as it used to be. But at least I don't have to be within feet of a bathroom all the time!

in reply to HeronNS

That's interesting Heron , I hadn't thought of adding ginger I'll give that a try. Wonder if it's methane I'm producing, I could maybe power something!

I think anything that aids your gut biome would help. I make my own Kombucha and also natural yoghurt both of which are good for gut biome. I have heard that charcoal tablets can help (available from a health food shop I should imagine) but haven't tried them myself. I think the advice of adding them slowly to your diet is sound too........

The only beans I can eat without digestive issues are cannellini beans in cans. I thoroughly rinse the canned liquid away and cook them with shallots, white fish like bream fillets, or pieces of chicken, and add cut up veggies to bake in the oven. Or use then in a salad, but start with small quantities as PMR advises. Fresh green French beans are lovely if gently cooked too. Experiment and see what works for you.

in reply to Bennijax

I like the cannelloni too. Your way of cooking them sound lovely. Think I should have started with less!

Beans are high carb. I can't digest them. Healthline guidelines say 1/2 cup. healthline.com/nutrition/are-beans-keto#:~:text=Green%20beans%20and%20black%20soybeans,in%20small%20amounts%20as%20well.

Might find this link works - healthline.com/nutrition/ar...

in reply to DorsetLady

That’s an interesting link, don’t think I could do Keto! Do green beans have the amount of protein as other beans? I prefer my green beans young so they don’t have bean seeds in them.

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply to

I was Jane424 ’s link, but hers didn't work…..sorry not an expert on beans….

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to

I believe it is the seeds (beans) that contain the protein so I think you'd have to eat quite a large quantity to get the equivalent of mature beans. Many foods contain small amounts of protein but it's hard to get enough, especially as we age, without consuming a more concentrated form, be it meat, dairy, eggs, seafood, legumes, seeds, etc.

in reply to HeronNS

Don’t think I like them that much, think I’ll stick with the mature ones! Afraid I mostly prefer my protein animal based although we don’t eat much meat these days.
