I don't think anyone is intentionally abrupt...but we all have a differing writing style. That may depend on us as individuals, or what we did in our working lives....

Sometimes it depends on the question asked, if a quick answer can be given, it will be, or the poster may be directed to a related post or relevant link - with just a few words.

We all have days that are better than others, and that may reflect in the replies or the recipient's perception of those replies..but if you feel a reply is not appropriate then there is a mechanism to report it.

I have been on this forum for about 9 years and have always found it to be, on the whole, very friendly and kind, as well as informative, but as we are reminded occasionally by the Administrators, it is a health forum, not a chat room, so the language may be different.

I'm sorry if you think someone's reply or writing style is abrupt but there are some people on the forum who read all the replies and posts and answer dozens of questions a day. Where it is required we may write a longer reply but if a single sentence and a link provides the answer, we do that for speed.

No-one here is paid for what they do and we all have different backgrounds - and ways of presenting facts.

I can understand how sometimes a reply can sound abrupt to a person and it can hurt. I do not think that anyone on this site does it intentionally.

If you have a problem with an abrupt reply, as DL says there is a mechanism to report it, at the bottom: Reply, Like, Report. If you report it, it will be dealt with fairly, privately and swiftly.

On the other hand a private message to the person who has been abrupt to you may just solve a misunderstanding. Just like when we are talking to each other.

Like DL, I have been around for sometime and yes, some replies unintentionally, might sound harsh or abrupt, but on the whole this site has a good reputation. I have looked on other sites and I would not touch them with a ten foot barge pole.

I have only been on this forum since March this year and posted just a couple of questions. I cannot thank the contributors enough for their help and advice and vast knowledge and experience. I would have been totally lost without this. The replies and responses have been fast and brilliant and considering it's all voluntary I appreciate that everyone has good and bad days but in view of the numerous posts that are answered on the forum I really don't think any criticism can be levelled at the 'experts'.

It was an observation not a criticism. This is a great group

Hi Uglow. Sometimes what may come across as abrupt in writing would not appear as such in the spoken word where tone, pace and expression make a difference, especially when face to face. I hope this reassures you.

When you say some people on this board are a bit abrupt, do you mean in reply to yourself or to others? I find that people are only trying to help.

I’d rather leave it there. No offence meant. Thanks you for your helpful advice

Sometimes the same question can be asked many times in one week, especially concerning Covid vaccines! I’ve been unwell the past two weeks but tried to help, but found my answers got less as I had to continually repeat the same thing. Our main contributors are volunteers who do a fantastic job and do repeat everything again and again ad nauseam . Hopefully this will be helped by the new FAQ section but only if people use it. Tbh, I’m totally amazed at their patience and have rarely seen abrupt answers.

Ok yes I get it. I hope you get your answers.

The reasoning behind the FAQs was twofold really -

One, to enable those of us on here a lot to direct others to the answers with just a quick intro or answer to a specific query, and

Second, for all members (old and new) to maybe have a look through them initially to see if their questions had already been addressed....but obviously if they hadn’t, then to raise a post.

We never mind addressing the same issue again, there’s very often something new to add, but sometimes- say you say, especially with whole COVID scenario - you can get the same question two or three times a day.

I hope people use it but as you say if the answer is there at least you can direct people to it! You are all truly patient helping people repeatedly on the same subject but I think this way people who need specific help or have an unusual question can receive more help as your tone is freed up a bit! Thanks for all you do, the pandemic has greatly increased the daily number of questions I feel! S x

I think a lot of it is the impossibility for many to get any contact with even their GP ... And there have been three and a half thousand new members since xmas 2019!

We're hoping it isn't just us using the FAQs but that YOU and everyone else will tell newer people where they are ;)

Pixix profile image
Pixix in reply to PMRpro

Wow! Lot of new members, increase in PMR, or??? Who knows. I thought the daily number of posts had increased a bit! But at least you can refer to them now and direct people to them if it’s an answer needed that’s in the FAQ’s! S x

A lot appeared during Covid this time last year - lack of access to the GP sent them to Dr Google maybe?

Pixix profile image
Pixix in reply to PMRpro

Yes, possibly, but I think a lot of people are not wanting to bother their doctor with questions right now because they have so much else to do with the never ending pandemic.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Pixix

So they come here to ask. But they seem also not to be bothering them with real illness questions either - my daughter in A&E says it is constantly manic and a lot are things the GP hasn't seen and so they have become acute and serious.

We have also had a spate of people joining, asking a question then leaving & then coming up as ‘Hidden’ as l pointed out a couple of weeks ago.

PMRpro reads Every Post and Comment; DorsetLady is not very far behind her.

One of the Reasons we went with FAQ’s was it means we can give a quick answer so not as much time is spent only for someone to disappear!.....

I don’t Moderate anymore but l read all Posts that are in ‘My Field’ & answer when/where l can help.

Thanks Pixix for all your input and your Support too 🙏🏼 if everyone can Read/Push & Share FAQ’s it would help Everyone.

It is said that mud is good for the skin; you must be positively glowing- even if it's just between the ankles and the knees. 🙂

We get this occasionally but as there are thousands of sufferers on here there are bound to be people who speak more forcibly than others.
