Kate. What is the possibility that people in the age bracket of 70 to 79 and 80 to 89 are not on the computer. I know two people in my community with GCA both are in their 80s and both are not computer literate. This could throw the results off. However there is no other way to do this poll. Thank you.

Hello Nap -

Yes, this is certainly the case. The rough mean age of respondents of our poll on PMR is 63. Medical surveys put the mean age of onset of PMR as in the 70s. So it's quite clear that our respondents on the web are skewed towards the younger age range. However, we can adjust for that, and many of our members who are not online are in the older decades. At the moment, in PMRGCAuk, we are particularly interested in getting a rough idea of how many younger people are being diagnosed as a proportion of the whole.

Regards

K

You have asked age when people were diagnosed....some of us took 1-2 years or more to get that diagnosis.

Would it be of benefit to ask age when onset of disease?

Dorothy

Hi Dorothy,

What we are specifically asking about here is related to doctors' attitudes about diagnosing PMR and GCA. It's just a very raw poll - not even a survey - that might lead to a more structured and 'scientific' questionnaire in the future.

thanks

Kate

Ooops, me too! I read PMR when you wrote GCA.

So sorry.

I was in the 50-59 age bracket if you wish to take one out.

Sorry me too, I didn't read it properly.  I thought it read PMR!  Apologies for any confusion in your results.  Maybe not having good attention to detail maybe another side effect of PMR.

I just stumbled on this poll while having some extra time on a day off from work & catching up on reading this awesome website. I accidently marked this poll. I don't see anywhere to correct my vote. So sorry! I did go in to the PMR poll and vote appropriately there too. Thank you for this site and the wealth of information!

There's a PMR poll?

Hi Kate l have found this website and hope it is still up to date.l was diagnosed with GCA a couple of months ago and have had a lot of anxiety with the presnosone. I am 74 and l think my father had it many years ago. After 2 weeks on the presnosone l got Shingles. Also my white blood cells shot through the roof.my dosage now is 35mg and l am feeling a little better.

I hope l can continue to read this website as it has made me very aware of this condition.

Looking forward to a reply

I was 71 years old when PMR came into my life. I am now 77. And I still have it - albeit with a lower dose of steroid. I now take 7 mg of Pred. per day. No signs yet of lowering that dose.
