Hi,Does anyone suffer with angular Chelities and if so how do you control it?

I have had episodes of it for a number of years and it normally clears up within a week with vaseline and/or surgical spirit. However, this time, it has been lurking around since 11 January.

Thanks for your help.

Hi HKAnne,

I’m so sorry to read. Painful and we use our mouths so much, talking, drinking, eating, brushing our teeth. I believe, it was Cherylclaire who recommended nipple cream. I do hope you have no problems with lanolin.

I am aware that other deficiencies can be the cause. The immediate one that sprang to mind was zinc. (B2, folate, iron are linked too).

It was my Oral Medicine consultant who told me to use nipple cream.

If you are not allergic to lanolin, then it's safe. 100% lanolin. Use it every morning after cleaning your teeth and same every night. He told me to ensure no reinfection by using cream from a pot on a spoon but I use the tube so don't bother with a spoon. It is very thick, so difficult to squeeze out too much and be tempted to double-dip, especially in winter. Be careful not to use too much - you can end up looking a bit rabid !

I still use this and now rarely get angular cheilitis, BUT if I stop using the nipple cream, the angular cheilitis returns within a few days. I was tested over the years a number of times for streptococcus and candida - no culture swabs showed any evidence of either.

He was initially concerned about my "sky-high" B12 due to frequent self-injecting - but has since discussed my case with colleagues and has now changed his opinion completely: he told me to continue with the injections as my body needs them and that tablets would not be effective ! Sadly this was not in writing in the following feedback to GP. Still, glad that this distraction has been eliminated.

I have also been examined due to saliva duct strictures and had a procedure to widen and hopefully straighten out the duct. The blockages cause swelling of the salivary gland when hungry - even now, if I miss a meal, eating the next one will leave me with a hamsterface for a while ! Sometimes, even reading a menu can set it off.

I have now been referred to another department (periodontal) for a biopsy as an abscess from 3 years ago seems to be still lurking about. Might lose a few more teeth too.

All these minor problems are significant and indicative (to me) that I still have underlying B12 deficiency. Especially since no-one has found evidence of any other cause. Other than that, the Pascoe every four days continues to give me a normal(ish) life. Sometimes every three days is necessary to keep me there or thereabouts.

It has been a lot, lot worse.

Hope the nipple cream does the trick !

Hi Cheryl Claire,Sorry to hear all that you have had to go through, well done for persevering. Hope all goes well for the abscess biopsy.

I have started using the nipple cream yesterday, so fingers crossed, this bout will clear up soon. I'm glad you mentioned how thick it is, I thought I had a dodgy batch!

Take care and have a good weekend.
