Hi,

If you have high blood pressure or a heart issue I wouldn't advise taking large amounts of liquorice..........

Who should not eat liquorice?

particularly if you're over 40 and have a history of heart disease or high blood pressure, or both. Eating more than 57g (2 ounces) of black liquorice a day for at least 2 weeks could lead to potentially serious health problems, such as an increase in blood pressure and an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia).

I would eat with caution.

Thank Jillymo. I was thinking of eating a few pieces after a meal (if I do eat it) 🤔

If you do keep an eye on your blood pressure. 😘

Is this because of the DGL in liquorice or if you eat it with the DGL removed are the risks still the same?

DGL means 'Deglycyrrhizinated' Liquorice. That means the bit that tends to cause high blood pressure has been removed. This is the type to use for gut issues, not the liquorice sticks that are the long sweet sticks you suck on!

Liquorice can also increase cortisol levels so need to be aware of that as a potential side effect.

Hi  Helliborous The type of liquorice used for gut healing is DGL - deglycyrrhizinated liquorice. This means the part that tends to cause high blood pressure is removed. Then it's made into a supplement. I still think you need to be mindful of using it if you have high blood pressure just in case. The sweet sticks you suck on I very much doubt will heal anything as it's full of sugar!

Taken from Healthline - "DGL is a form of licorice that people have processed for safer consumption. They remove a substantial amount of a substance called glycyrrhizin. This makes DGL safer for long-term use and has less interactions with medical conditions or medications than liquorice extract".

I have used DGL within another product when I had a very bad bout of gastritis a few years ago, I found it helpful in the healing process although it still took time. Link to the product below. It used to be easily available in the UK, not sure why not anymore and now is very expensive and I can only find it on iHerb. You can get DGL much more cheaply on it's own but the one I tried had the other ingredients (l-glutamine and aloe vera) which are supposed to be good for healing the gut lining.

What were you thinking of using liquorice for?

Hi Bertiepuss, thank you for the info, very informative. I have PA and extensive Intestinal Metaplasia and can have problems with digestion and silent reflux so was looking to try something that might settle it after meals. I am taking Betaine hcl .

Sorry, I'm afraid I can't help any further, not sure if DGL would work for you or not as I have no knowledge of Intestinal Metaplasia. Might be worth consulting with a Naturopathic doctor that has experience of this? Sorry, not much help, just wanted to make sure you didn't start eating sugary liquorice sticks thinking that's the same as DGL.

Hi Helliborous,

I have AIG and PA too. I am assuming u have AIG if u have metaplasia. I use the Terra origin brand from uk iherb. It has slippery elm and glutamine in it too.
