My test was positive but an if test not was not done... what does this tell me please??

My Parietal Cell Antibody test was positive and after an endoscopy I was diagnosed with PA... I believe that means you do not provide the gut with intrinsic factor to bind with the B12 from food. I don't think it is necessary to have antibodies to IF to gain a diagnosis. Others may disagree but twice in Australia I have been told the IF was unnecessary in my case. The testing for IF is often unreliable.

I had both tests.

I was positive for IF antibodies but negative for Gastric Parietal Cell antibodies.

My neurologist said testing positive for either one means you have PA.

You don't need to be positive for both.

I had the parietals positive and no IF test also had mild stomach atrophy enough for PA . i also had large red cells and low folic acid and a B12 of 20. Anaemic too. I was a mess as it also caused angina. much better now but some neuro deficits and other bits. Hope you get well soon. parietals can show also with thyroid disease another auto immune condition

You can test positive for parietal cell antibodies for a few different reasons. Here is what labtestsonline has to say about it:

"A positive test must be evaluated in the context of a person's other test results. Parietal cell antibodies are not as specific as intrinsic factor antibodies. About 90% of those with pernicious anemia will have parietal cell antibodies, but they may also be found in:

•Up to 50% of people with gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining)

•Up to 30% of people with thyroiditis

•A variety of other conditions and autoimmune disorders

•A small percentage of the general population

The parietal cell antibody test is not used to diagnose or monitor these conditions."

All that being said, the presence of parietal cell antibodies does typically mean that your immune system is acting against the cells that line your stomach. That inhibits your body's ability to produce intrinsic factor which in turn inhibits your ability to absorb B12. So while you may not end up with an official diagnosis of pernicious anemia, a positive test result should result in treatment of B12 deficiency with injectable B12.
