Anyone had to give up their driver liscence because of PD. Specialist has adviced my husband not to drive
Hi - yes I was diagonised with Parkinsons then 3 weeks later had to renew my licence, I was 54 at the time. and because Parkinsons was noted on my application form my HT (Class 2) licence was cancelled and my car licence put on temporary hold. I managed to keep this by speaking with the medical team at Land Transport. I still have my car licence but have to be very aware of where or for how long I'm driving, especially with medication overlaps.
The medical team were very helpful and I could have challenged the ruling, but we compromised with my driving being assesed by a driving instructor (working with LTNZ) and I still also have my class 2 But ONLY to drive our motorhome.
The main thing I found is their concern or danger to other road users. Once assesed it was plain sailing, however this is on going checking.
Stupidly enough if my licence renewal had come through 3 weeks earlier it would have automatically been done as we weren't aware of my condition at that time.
I find driving for a large part of the day, I need to rest the following day due to tiredness, lack of concerntration. Being aware of limitations is important and LISTENING to the CO-PILOT that I need to pull over now and let her take over.

I still have my licence but every three years I am retested. It takes 3 hours and one hour is actually driving. I think that it is important to know if your neurologist is seeing something that he feels will make you a danger on the roads. If you think you are still capable of driving then ask to be retested. I know some people with PD who have restricted licences such as cannot drive at night or more than 15km from home.
If retesting does show problems then you will have to accept it. I don't know how I will feel when I am eventually told that I can no longer drive! All the best. Anne
Unfortunately this is a real problem for most Parkinsonians. When that dreaded day comes, there are some alternatives. Most Councils supply ½ price taxi vouchers. If you live in town sell your car and buy a scooter. They are an excellent alternative to enable you to get out and about and keep a little independence.
