Any suggestions on how to get more sleep. I usually go straight to sleep and then wake up at about 1:30am and can not go back to sleep. I tried 3mg melatonim but does not seem to help.

cshamb,

I have tried melatonin at or just before bedtime and it does nothing for me, but what I have found that works for me other than medical marijuana (MM) is taking melatonin as three capsules. If I want to go to sleep at 11:00 pm, I take one capsule at 9:00 pm, the second capsule at 10:00 pm and the third capsule at 11:00 pm. I call this 123 melatonin and it works similarly to MM for me and is cheaper than MM. I like to mix it up by using MM on some nights and 123 melatonin on other nights and nothing on some nights.

Thanks for your reply. What dosage of melatonin do you take at a time?

I've used the 5 mg and the 10 mg, but there are also 3 mg and 1 mg that I have seen available. The 5 and 10 work for me, but I have not tried the 3 mg or 1 mg.

cshamb,

You might read the following post, as Mogul1 tried this "123 melatonin" option last night for his insomnia and said it worked well to put him to sleep last night :

I do similar to Art. But take 10 mg bout an hour or so prior to bed and 5 mg when going. MM is also my alternative. I mix it up so I don’t become “used to” one vs the other.

I do NOT have PD, but when my son was mis-DX with PD (for three years) I periodically read the shares on this site. I am 78years old and the mom of a son, who at 55, May 4, 2017, died of PSP. That's my full disclosure to help you evaluate my share.

Silvestrov posted MY LIST OF DAILY SUPPLEMENTS about a year ago. I follow his protocol "before bedtime"......500mg Magnesium threonate, 250mg baicalin (I buy mine from LIFTMODE, a powder with measuring tool), and 400mg Full Spectrum Skullcap (from SWANSON). The brand choices are all mine, but often people ask, so I am beating you to the punch.

I am up at 5AM and do, 5 days a week, a 4 mile walk....since 1974. I take the night supplements about 8:30pm and by 9:30pm I get myself to bed. I sleep deeply, but still wake up 2-3 times to use the bathroom (common at my age). I have been following the protocol for about 6 months.

I use to take tumeric (curcumin) for my aches and pains, but after adding the Skullcap I discontinued it.

BTW, I have also been doing the B1hcl.....only up to 500mg 2x a day.

Hope this helps you as much as it has me.

enjoysalud,

If you have a chance and you have not already done so, could you add your B-1 / HDT experience or update it if you have already added it to the "who is taking HDT" thread here:

Thank you!

Art, I intermittently share when I think it would be helpful.

I do NOT have any neurological disease that I know of, and think it would be unfair and misleading to share my experience on that thread. I'm sure there are others that would disagree but that is what I have decided. Thank you for being so inclusive, and inviting me to share on that thread.

enjoysalud,

My apologies, I had forgotten your background! I fully understand what you are saying and it was a momentary memory lapse on my part. Thank you for correcting me on that.

Art, you never have to apologize to me.....you do so much good work on this site. Besides, with so many people contributing how can you possible remember everyone's back ground and values?

Blessings to you, M

Something I found most helpful has been over-the-counter sleep aids or something like Benadryl but it is an anti-cholergenic and not good for our brains. As the PD progresses so my difficulty with sleeping progresses. Now I am trying melatonin again and when I’m really desperate I take a Xanax in the lowest dose.

Hi cshamb. I found that if I let it stress me, I don't do well at all. If I am unable to get back to sleep I get up and go into another room and read an interesting but not exciting book. When I feel sleepy I go back to bed and sleep again. If I don't let it stress me I get enough sleep and I am not up-tight.

My body got used to all medication I took over the years to help me sleep longer. Then I either had to take more and soon take even more. Often the pills had side effects.

It is better to do as I said

I had the same but now I got rid of the stress of having PD and I void my memory when I go to bed about the same time every night. If I wake up during the night I just empty my mind of taughts and get asleep very quick.

You need to exercise emptying your mind even during the day. Also a half of an onion gives me a very good sleep and colored sweet dreams.

I used to get 2 or 3 hours sleep a night and felt OK on it - I didn’t worry about it. However, when I changed to a Keto Diet 6 months ago and gradually came off all my meds (Ropinirole and Sinemet for 7 years), I got back to 7 or 8 hours and am expecting that to improve my health over time.

Best regards, Phil 2bats
