Bacopa monnieri for PD

A very good and informative article on Natural therapies for Parkinson. An extract from it is as follows

"Bacopa monnieri (Bm) is an herb that contains antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, neuroprotective, and memory enhancing properties. Bm extract has been found to improve cognitive function and movements in animal studies."

it further says

"The researchers concluded that some of these products, specifically Mp and Bm extract, may be useful adjuncts in PD treatment,"

I am using two of the mentioned natural remedies namely Mucuna and Ashwagandha and felt a marked improvement. I am now thinking to add Bacopa monnieri into my regimen. Please note that I purchase only the raw herbs and prepare it myself.

I take 3 ts in the morning and 2 ts in the evening. However everyone need is different. You have to find the correct dose by trial and error (starting from low dose)

I have taken following excerpt from the book "Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeial Plant Drugs: Expanded Therapeutics by C. P. Khare"

For Parkinson’s disease, powdered Cowhage extract (HP-200, Zandopa of Zandu), standardized to contain 3.3% L-dopa, has been used (22.5–67.5 g divided into two to five doses per day).

Standardized powdered Cowhage seed preparations, containing L-dopa, seem to lessen symptoms of Parkinson’s disease at a relative low dose, compared to conventional L-dopa products. Constituents other than levodopa might have anti Parkinson activity.

Great well I will start my husband on it and take one myself too although I don’t have Parkinson’s! Have you found a good remedy for anxiety in your research? He is taking ashwaghanda, St. John’s wort but still very anxious. Would bacopa help that too?

Bacopa has been used effectively in India for thousands of years as a remedy to promote memory and help with brain disorders. Today bacopa is used to treat symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, memory loss, ADHD, anxiety and stress.

How you make powder from Mucuna (velvet beans) ? I have beans in raw form but dont know how to make powder.

Farooqji profile image
Farooqji in reply tonaveedahsan

roast the beans for 10 Minutes in oven (at 150 deg C) , or in dry fry pan so that the shells of the beans are cracked. Air cool and remove the shells (cover of the beans) Then grind it in pestle or coffee grinder and make fine powder by using sieve. Remember protective cover on the beans is dangerous to eat

Thank you so much for your help. Now i have two powders.

1) Velvet Beans

2) Ashwagandha & Bacopa Monneiri

But second one is not so fine because of bacopa. So i decided to make tea from it. Is it right ?

I think that you should purchase standardized extract of Ashwagandha & Bacopa Monneir. Both are available in capsules form . GNC shops in Lahore and karachi sell both of these. There is a Pakistan company who process and manufacture these powders and sell them in bulk (minimum 1 kg) They produce 10:1 extract of velvet beans powder as well. Their website is

herbasian.com.pk

It has to be taken in much less dose as compared to raw powder

How is your father doing? There is a retired atomic scientist in Islamabad who has been suffering from the disease for the last 17 years and doing quite well. He has done a lot of research and developed a regimen of ayurveda medicinal plant. He has written a short book which can be found in the following link.
