Steroids have been mentioned by the specialist nurse and oncologist treating my husband Pete. Can anyone tell me what they do please.

Hi SanandPete,

Steroids are often used alongside chemotherapy treatment. Their main function is to either help the chemotherapy be more effective, to help prevent sickness when given in small doses and can prevent an allergic reaction to some chemotherapy drugs.

Steroids are synthetic drugs of substances the body produces itself and they help regulate our immune system, can control inflammation and control the way the body uses fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

Do ask your specialist nurse for information relating to the steroid Pete will be on and he/she will be able to give you a clearer understanding of why they will be using steroids in this instance.

Hope this helps,

Ali

Thanks Ali. I was hoping they might give Pete a boost. He is very low at the moment.
