I saw a pain consultant (NHS) once who explained about myofacial pain but unfortunately, the treatment approach didn't work for me - I don't think it was the fault of the consultant in that the origin of my pain was unknown for several years so I wasn't actually given a diagnosis of myofacial pain, it was just a possible explanation.

The consultant did explain that not all doctors believe in myofacial pain, and that they would perhaps not support treatment for it. So that explains why it's perhaps hard to get the help you want.

Have you been to a pain clinic?

Hello

Could it be you may need to see a dentist, for the jaw, I had a few teeth out a long time ago and it caused my bite to be out of balance and the bite had collapsed I needed a splint for about six months , so it affected the jaw. Sometimes the jaw can have arthritis in the joint. Possibly they will give you some Xrays. Have words with your Dentist he should refer you to a Dental Hospital, the Dentist He could refer you easier than your GP, that is what happened in my case

Just a suggestion

Bob, I'm wondering if you've misunderstood this a bit - "myofascial" sounds like it should be connected with the jaw and face, but it's actually (as Bowbells says) the connective tissue, and it occurs all over the body. Loads of people have thought it to be a face thing when I've mentioned it, probably made worse as my pain started in my face! You'd have thought humans would have come up with names for things that sound distinct by now, to avoid all this confusion!

Hello

Hello

I have just been to Hospital to have my two year dental appointment, part of my condition is

TEMPOROMANDIBULA (Jaw Joint Disorder) This affects the lower jaw and base of

skull.

GP (s), refer to this as Myofascial Pain disorder.

The condition includes joints and soft tissue problems with the jaw, See connections with above.on NHS CHOICES.

I have also been onto the Association website and you will see that the jaw can also be affected.

I have had this problem now for about thirty years and have to have sedation when visiting a dentist, The treatment consists of having the jaw gagged to open the mouth as the joint and soft tissue problems make it very difficult to open and close the mouth,as now arthritis in the jaw. has set in

Part of the treatment is sedation, that includes a possible two hours of full oral Surgery, It is now three days since the procedure in I feel like a hamster with his cheeks full of nuts, it is very painful Treatment this time was one extraction and five fillings with general periodentology..

All the best

That's interesting, didn't know that, though it stands to reason it occurs in the face too, given all the muscles there. Funny though, I was treated for suspected TMJ problems for a year and no one ever mentioned it.

Hope you are feeling better soon, Bob. I remember the jaw surgery I had as being very painful, so you have my every sympathy.

I had a private physio once who worked on my fascia (my diagnosis is central chronic pain state with congenital hypermobilty syndrome ie. I have faulty connective tissue amongst other things). Her massage connected the body head to foot and I found it very helpful. I am very sorry to tell you this was many years ago, I was living in a different part of the country and I cannot remember her name. I'm so sssorry I can't help you more, but wish you luck.

PS The fascia (spell correctly if you google it) are the connective tissues that run the length of your body and and allow your muscles and tendons to glide over each other. They cannot cause arthritis. Myofascial pain is any or multiple areas of tight muscle which is tender or painful to the touch. It easily becomes chronic and spreads to other areas (source: Medscape). I find a weekly gentle full body massage helps a good deal but the problem is back the following week. Mindfulness of posture helps a lot too and gentle exercise and stretching is important. I swim and walk when I am able. The best place is probably a pain clinic, and if you can get into one, a pain management course. Wishing you luck..

I would recommend the Walton center's maxio facial department in Aintree near Liverpool.

They might have moved to Aintree hospital now but they were one of the first in Europe and are one of the best in the world.

Good luck!

I too have suffered with terrible jaw pain which can sometimes cause awful shooting pains in my ear, after trying all conservative treatment I am now on a waiting list for surgery,I wonder if you have discussed surgical options with your consultant? I know it sounds drastic but I know how bad the pain can be and really know what you are going through, like me you will probably try anything good luck

With my condition the GP could not diagnose my condition, my Dentist saw the problem and realised I was a bad patient through been brutalised by bad dentistry, She referred me to The Dental Hospital, they took over all dentistry

A Oral Surgeon was brought in with an Orthodontist.. They then gave me a splint to wear and sedations where undertaken to increase the height of bite and fillings, that has been the case now for near on thirty years.

Over the last three years my condition was not brought up as I had had several operations and they had been able to ventilate.

This time the dentist/Anaethnatist , excuse spelling. found that my bite was reverting and now had Psoriatic Arthritis in both sides of the jaw.so I was unable to open my mouth fully by over 35%.

They had to not only sedate as normal and freeze the teeth etc, they also had to give Opiates as well as they needed to use a Gagg. It feels that they are hightening my fillings again as now have very few teeth. Now I am suffering severe pain in my jaw and the tissue around it now is very swollen and sore.

All the best

BOB
