Niraparib & the Sun?

Hi everyone

Have been successfully on early access Niraparib for 10 months but shocked to find that when I sit in the sun I get a prickly burning sensation especially in my ankles. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks, Marie

Hi ! Yes me too, mine on back of hands and face like hot pins and needles esp if there is a breeze on my skin. Factor 30 stops it, but also get it when the shower is too hot.!!

Yes the breeze thing is interesting. Will try anti-histamines I think. Thanks for reassuring me. I will certainly mention it to the Prof when I see him next. M

Hi Riverside--here in the U.S. it says my PARP makes me "photosensitive" so to wear sunscreen outside no matter what and not to go into direct sunlight (ie. sunbathe). I love sitting on the beach so this will be difficult! oxox

Oh well little ghosts we will have to be. The burning and itching on my feet at night is driving me crazy but am now taking anti-histamines to see if that works

I have the same issue on my toes. Any sun exposure makes them feel as though they are severely burned even if I use sunscreen. My doctor said it’s probably because the DNA is being damaged and this drug inhibits DNA repair.

They inhibit the cancer cells from repairing themselves but that shouldn’t involve DNA. Weird - I don’t think that they know enough about how it works and what the side effects are. M

I too had this - really wierd - I expected to see massive blisters, but it just felt like it.

Yes exactly that. Have stayed out of the sun for a couple of days and it’s getting better.

I've been on Niraparib since May. I can only be in the sun for short periods of time or I start to feel like my skin is on fire. Ears and shoulders are the worst. I now wear water shirts in the pool and keep some SPF50 in my handbag. I've also noticed that I tan (and burn) a lot easier. I'm normally very pale and right now I look like I've spent the last two months on the beach.
