Any preventative medicines to stop it?
Hi to all the ladies and admin Does anyone else... - My Ovacome
Hi to all the ladies and admin Does anyone else suffer from recurring UTI/kidney infections.Any advice? Love Lynn
Yes Lynn had months of antibiotics after op but they did not work. Never had UTI before either! Doctor recommended D Mannose powder or capsules with cranberry extract (min 300mg per capsule or tablet). You need to take both. Cranberry makes pesky bladder walls slippery and D Mannose clears bacteria away. Kicks in on 14 th day. Has literally changed my life. D Mannose hard to get. Boots don't stock it but have good Cranberry caps. Sweet cures website sells it. Good luck!
Hi Alice thanks for your reply.I had my op in Aug 2011 and finished chemo in Feb 2012.I get a lot of infections if I don't get to loo on time(if im bursting) and I found I got this one as I was in the pool on New Year( I live in south Africa) Don't think I,ll be able to get the D Mannose powder here but I can get cranberry. Do you know whats in the D Mannose pills? Maybe I can get something similar. Thanks again xxx
Yes absolutely - agony was unbearable Lynn. I couldn't believe that such a result was possible as I had had about 6 courses of powerful antibiotics. If I stop the d Mannose and crNberry infection comes back but urologist says it will improve.
How long is it since you ha your op?Did you have chemo too? I was stage 3b had total abdominal hysterectomy and debulking.
Hi Alice just realised you must wonder why I said I was in the pool lol ! why I said that was that apparently the chlorine in the pool can give you a UTI.Plus I went to town on Friday and had to wait for loo til I got home Sorry If you were confused by my remark xx
Hi Lynn lived in Zim for 10 years so understood! Yes 3c and op three months ago - won't discuss swimming pools but you may have to go to salt rather than chlorine!
Yes! But I had frequent UTIs before I had cancer. I'm having tests at the moment to try to find out if I have small stones in my urinary system. The only thing that works for me is antibiotics, alas. Sometimes you can be given antibiotics long term to try to prevent UTIs, but I haven't tried that. If it doesn't resolve, you could perhaps see a urologist. Best Vxxx
Thanks for your reply V, Ive only had 2 lots of antibiotics so far but will go for check up in a few weeks to my oncologist and explain to him whats going on x
Hello - try The Nutricentre. - Nicola
Hi Nicola thank you for your reply I will goggle Nutricentre to see where I can get the powder xxx
Hi ,many years ago I had what was 4 tubes that went from the kidey to the bladder instead of the normal 2 , so I had surgery to re implant two of them as they were also causing urine to go back to the kidney . The best things I found after surgery were baby wipes after going to the loo and Ural which in Australia you can buy over the counter .Celery and Cranberry juice also helpful .Now with having OC stage 111/4 blockages are more of an issue an pain at the end of weeing .Sorry if a bit blunt in language . Love Penny
Hi Penny thanks for your reply I never thought of baby wipes that's a good idea and a lot more hygienic than loo paper!,I have got cranberry and will look for the Ural,I wonder if its not the same as Urispas which we get here. Can you look at the active ingredients for me please? Sorry to be a pain.Yes I,too, get a pain at the end of weeing and no you,re not blunt at all lol !! I am fed up of getting them now Thanks again xxx
Meant to say that Im sorry you had to have tubes removed what a big op for you along with the O/C that's not nice xxx
Hi Lynn,
I am also from SA - in Jhb. Try the Solal people for the D Mannose. compounding.co.za They are in Bryanston. I had a kidney infection which was caused by the tubes being squashed by the tumour and the kidneys not draining properly ie you get hydronephrosis which in turn causes infections. I make a habit of lying alternately on my right and left sides at night and it seems to let the kidneys drain properly.
Hi Anne, Im in Witbank thanks for your reply I will contact them and try the D Mannose powder that Alice uses. Ive had my surgery and chemo so its not( a tumour I hope) what you you have. I do try and lie alternate sides but always end up on right side lol ! Thanks again nice to know somebody else from RSA on this brilliant site xxx
I know a couple of people who were prescribed low doses of Trimethoprim long term, aimed at preventing recurrences. It's an antibiotic given to treat UTIs. But I would think that if there is a suitable alternative that works, it would save the need for long term antibiotics. I haven't needed to look into it for myself yet. I had a UTI for the first time last week. As I'm on chemo, I was advised to go to A & E as I had a raised temperature, & ended up celebrating (!) the start of the New Year during a chat with one of the A & E doctors. I went home later with a supply of the antibiotics, & need to wait & hope that it doesn't return.
A belated happy new year to everyone, & hope it's as healthy as is possible for you.
Di
