I am sorry that you husband is having a lot of trouble with Avastin, I see you are living in Switzerland so the criteria for having Avastin might be different than here in the UK ..

This is a support site for Ovarian Cancer and unfortunately Avastin has been turned down by the NICE organisation for treatment for OC so there will be very few people now that are on Avastin...you could go to the tags at the top of the page and look for Avastin there might be something there that can help you.

Best wishes G

Hi Gwyn .. What was the reason for not allowing Avastin? Love T x

Hi Tina,

It is not cost effective... but an individual can apply for funding if it is deemed necessary... If you go on the Ovacome Blog Louise Bayne (Ovacome Chief Executive) has written a blog explaining it ...I think it was in March she wrote the blog.

You go on the blog site (not questions) and underneath the greeny/blue bar it is written "Ovacome Blog" press that and scroll down.

Love x G x :-)

Hi Gwyn .. I know it must seen obvious..but can Avastin be bought privately and if so, how much does it cost! X

Hi Tina,

I think it can be bought privately but I think it is very expensive, also like Charlie mentioned (below) it is not suitable for some people and can cause other problems so isn't good for everyone, I think that the OC charities are trying to get it passed by nice at a smaller dosage but it hasn't happened yet, there is another drug out that is similar to Avastin but cheaper ( but I can't remember the name) maybe the Ovacome helpline will be able to help with this question but they are not available over the bank holiday. Hi there

Avastin can be effective in son people , but is an extremely strong drug that is still not fully understood. The side effects can be very distressing , perforation of the bowel has been reported in some people.

I am a lucky person to be allowed a long course of avast in! The main side effects I get are bleeding gums, extreme fatigue and I suspect it is causing me quite severe back pain! But I am persevering as out of 18 infusions I only have 5 left and my last scan was totally clear! Now it may just be me or it maybe the avastin but I won't give the cancer any chance of coming back if this is the way to go!

Hi Bougheycat,

Yes you probably were on it before NICE turned it down and agreed that patients with OC who were having it already can remain on it.... It is however available to others with a different cancer.
