What is causing my itchy throat and mouth?

I am now in my fouth week of having an irritated mouth and throat, I am so frustrated and tired, I dont know what to do. It started off with having an itchy back of mouth which got worse over a week, it got to the point where it was keeping me awake so went to the doctors and the nurse thought it was oral thrush and prescribed nystatin oral mouth wash, which eased the pain slightly. It then got a lot worse and the back of my mouth was red raw so went back to the doctors, he said it was a throat infection and prescribed penicillan for 7 days and anticeptic mouthwash. Again, eased the pain but got a lot worse on some days, espececially in the evenings. He took a mouth swab but came back with 'no bug grown'. With symptoms still carrying on (red back of mouth, sore throat, itchy roof of mouth and throat, itchy ears, burning sensation at times, pain at night) I went back to the doctors who said my mouth looked imflammed but no infection, and took bloods and gave me some diflam to ease the soreness. This helped, but symptoms still coming and going. Bloods came back to say that I have had glandular fever at some point, but not present now or recent (I dont know what that means?) .

Last night it got alot worse again and felt red raw with unbearable itchy, pins and needles pain on the roof of my mouth and back throat. The two areas near my tonsils are bright red and inflammed. I rang the out of hours GP service this morning and I was seen by a nurse who said my BP, temp are all fine and can see no signs of infection and just prescribed co-codamol.

I am looking for someone who can give me any extra info or reasons this may be happening? feel like I dont know where else to look for help. I am currently taking, ibruprofen, co-codamol, diflam mouthwash, antihystamine tablets for throat. Other medications I take for other reasons are amitryptilin (10mg), nitrofuratoin (50mg), solifencacin (10mg).

Hi,

I had and still having similar symptoms to yours, but perhaps not as severe.

The specialist has inserted camera through my nose down my throat and then he told me it was acid reflux.

I think you need anti acid reflux tablets, not sure which though.

Try gaviscon until you go back to your doctor as it sounds like you will need more powerful tablets like ranitidine or omeprazol etc.

Hope you get better soon.

Hope all goes well. I know how annoying this can be. I’m no expert, but it sounds to me like acid reflux. Fingers crossed for you

Sounds like a food allergy or maybe a reaction to your toothpaste??? go to an allergist and get tested for allergies. Tell them your symptoms.

thank you very much! I was given nasal spray and antihystamines and that has done the trick for over a month, but now can feel it coming back at times. I am thinking this may be a reaction to something too.

I was given nasal spray and antihystamines and this has done the trick, my symptoms went in a matter of a day or two. However, after over a month my symptoms are coming back slightly. Does anyone have any experience with this? do you think it may be an allergy or acid reflux?
