Sick of sickness!

Hi,

I'm 20 months post post surgery and 15 months since I finished post op chemo. For the last 10 days i've been sick every morning with bile. I've not been eating much at all because I just haven't felt like it. When I do eat I can only eat a tiny amount. I seem to have these spells every couple of months now and its really getting me down. I was hoping to go away for xmas but now I think what's the point if i'm going to feel like this. I haven't been eating late, so I just don't understand what's causing this other than it'd just the way its going to be forever. I had a ct scan fairly recently, which showed liquid in my oesophagus. Apparently this not emptying fully is a common consequence of the surgery. This is probably something to do with the sickness. Any advice please its really getting me down now.

Hi Eileenq,

I'm only 9 months past surgery, so I shouldn't be someone to give advise. But I'd rather share my symptoms and what I try to do about them.

(Not easy to write this down nor easy to read.)

I think I can distinguish between bile reflux and acid reflux. Acid reflux makes anything burn, I feel it even in my ears. Bile reflux makes me feel sick. Gall bladder obviously (in my case) starts to produce bile at around 5 a. m. When I get up at 8, I feel sick. I brush my teeth, drink half a glass of water, then I spit this yellow fluid into the sink.

Then I take my PPI pill with some apple juice and can have breakfast.

Ranitidine and/or Gaviscon before going to sleep seems to reduce the production of bile in my case. Or it's just because at the moment bile and acid reflux is kept down, because I need another stretch.

What did the doctors tell you about liquid in your oesophagus? How can they tell on CT? Will you have gastroscopy?

Best wishes,

Monika

Correction: Acid reflux makes everything (not anything) burn. I meant a feeling from stomach (where is the junction) up to throat.

Eileen,

I find that I get bile reflux when I don’t eat enough, it’s almost like you have to keep your system flowing in one direction by eating and drinking to ensure the bile follows the correct direction of flow. This may be totally daft and have I have no evidence to support it but th emajority of my bile attacks occur when I have not eaten enough. Try snacking continuously if possible, I know it’s hard, I am almost in a routine, but I do still forget and I soon know about it when I do.

Good luck.

Z
