Venetia Wynter-Blyth and Krishna Moorthy, who some of you will know as a clinical nurse specialist and surgeon respectively from St Mary's Paddington, would like to invite around 15 patients from the London area to help in a workshop they are planning for Thursday 24 March. It will be at Friends Meeting House, right opposite Euston station, and it is all about how best to involve patients in the treatment process. It does not specifically invite spouses / carers, but I am sure they would be welcome as their contribution would be valuable.

If you are interested, the contact person is nawal.ahmed@imperial.nhs.uk or telephone 020 3311 7373

I am copying the invitation below for your information:

We are inviting you to participate in a workshop entitled ‘Patients as Partners’. This will be held on Thursday 24th March, from 12:30 – 16:15 at the Friends House in Euston (friendshouse.co.uk/getting-.... We would like to improve the experience and outcomes of people with oesophageal and stomach cancer and would value your input to help us do this. We would like to invite you to share your experiences of the surgical pathway so we can learn how to improve and develop our services.

An integral aspect of the Oesophago-Gastric surgical pathway is the timely and appropriate delivery of goal setting so that patients, their families and friends are able to actively contribute to the overall outcome. It is important that this is supported by good quality information so that patients know what to expect and when to expect it.

If you would like to be involved in this workshop or for further details please contact Nawal Ahmed, Project Co-ordinator, either via email – nawal.ahmed@imperial.nhs.uk or telephone 02033117373

We are looking for approximately 15 participants from within the London area. Travel costs will be reimbursed and lunch and refreshments provided on the day.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Mr Krishna MoorthyVenetia Wynter-Blyth

Workshop Preparation

In order to prepare for the workshop it would be helpful if you could reflect on the following three areas. These will all be discussed at the workshop:

1.Provision of information during your surgical treatment pathway. Please consider

•how much information you required

•when you required information

•what sort of information you required

2.Did you feel involved in all decision-making processes throughout the surgical treatment pathway?

3.What are your views on the use of goal setting. For instance would you like to be told what to do or negotiate goals with the clinical team? Would your involvement in the goal setting process change depending on where you are in your process of surgical treatment? What factors might motivate you or what obstacles to achieving your goals have you experienced?
