I have not heard of Roux-en -y proced... - Oesophageal & Gas...
I have not heard of Roux-en -y procedure either, does this mean removal of oesophagus and stomach please?
A roux-en-y procedure is apparently a stomach by-pass operation, quite often done as a surgical procedure to combat obesity, but I seem to remember that the name comes from the fact that a by-pass junction is made below the stomach in a Y shape. It is also used, I think, for other reasons. In one case it is because the patient had a lot of trouble with the stomach emptying properly. I think that the technique is used for some cases where the stomach is partly removed, and, in effect, the stomach is left out on a limb.
There is an explanation on the web en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastr... but it is a surgeon that really needs to answer this question properly, rather than me! A little information can be a dangerous thing!
Thank you Alan.
I have just had this done. My cancer was right on the junction between the Oesophagus & Stomach. I had Lymph nodes involved on the Stomach, so my operation was a total Gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y reconstruction. It leaves the upper Oesophagus in place & connects the small intestine to the base of this. There is no Stomach left at all.
Thank you so much for enlightening me, it is very interesting to hear of different procedures and know their names. I run a support group on the south coast and it might be a question that I get asked.
I do hope that you are recovering well.
Very best wishes.
What you describe as having an Oeosphagectomy accompanyed by a Total Gastrectomy with what sounds like a Roux-En-Y reconstruction. Oesophagectomy removed the diseased part of the gullet leaving a small portion to attach to the small intestine. I had the Oeosophagectomy done back in October 2004 but my stomach was made into a tube and pulled up into the chest as a new gullet.
