Hi Valerie, sorry to hear how frightened you are for your husband. But remember it is early days and it sounds as if he has a very good surgeon. I had a similar problem that first the drain into my lung moved and caused a lot of pain, but was corrected. Then two days before I was due home my temperature spiked and I sprung a leak in my Oesophagus. It meant quite a long time in hospital, but with excellent medical care in The Cumberland Infirmary I was discharged home. That was 10 years ago. So baby steps Valerie and all will be well.

Take care, stay strong

Warm regards

Edwina xx

Valerie01,

Sorry to know your husband, Pete had taken ill and now in hospital. Its heartbreaking to see you two in a situation like this, its beyond our control, this Chinese virus.

It's a major surgery and at times there are some infections and associated complications. This offcourse effects in addition hospital stay and rollercoaster of emotions.

I had tonloads of complications and survived to tell the story. So dont lose hope. Prayers for Pete.

On a practical note, can you not drop his mobile phone with the staff so you two can stay connected? Some assistance might be required from ICU staff but believe can be requested?

It's easy to say to you to stay strong and have faith, but that's a very good option.

Good luck.

If he is weaker then kind staff if requested nicely could help dial and put on loudspeaker and hold the phone close to his mouth. His voice may be muffled as well if on 02mask or ventilator or wont be able to speak, point is if he is awake then he can listen you and find comfort.

More than anything he needs assurance of listening to you, and please you will have to manage your expectations on a normal two way phone call.

Good luck.

Hi my experience was identical.Everything was ok then I had a leak.I went back into theatre and it was touch and go.It will be 2yrs in May ,so take heart I am in lockdown with my wife and well enough to do all the jobs we should of done over the last 2yrs.I recovered after the leak slowly but consistently we men are stronger and more determined than people think.Support him and look after yourself 👍🏻

Hi, 8 years post op now i to had a few complications, one being the drain leaking, was a little embarrassed telling the nurse about it and the sheets wet. The nursing staff were excellent and took it in their stride.

We are in a difficult situation with NO visits being allowed, so mobiles are the only contact with the outside world. I`m sure the nursing staff would help out if he is so weak, or try ringing the ward and asking them if they can phone you on his mobile.

Take heart from others on this site who have also gone through the mill and come out the other side.

I`m sure all the others on here wish you all the best fiends and family are a great support in times like these.

Best wishes.
