Spots/rash on body

Hi. My husband had an oesophagectomy op 5 weeks ago and is generally doing ok apart from weight loss.He was prescribed penicillin 2 weeks ago for an infection at the jj site. It was a 10 day course but after a week he stated coming out in spots/rash so the specialist nurse said to stop taking the penicillin which he did. Now a week later the spots are getting worse on his legs and arms and seem to be going into a rash on his back. The spots are not itchy. I wondered if it is being caused by the overnight feeds. Has anyone else experienced this or can give any advice on this?

Hi Hogwart,

I had operation in June 2018. I was on jeg feed for around 7 months post operation. I never suffered from what you are experiencing with your husband. If there is a concern make an appointment with gp or go to walk in centre. Sometimes it takes someone outside of your normal team to see things and act upon them . Good luck for a speedy recovery .

Sounds like he is allergic to the antibiotic, it will probably take a few days to clear his system. Give it a couple more days then see your GP if the rash remains or is still very itchy. I have had this and they were able to find a more suitable antibiotic for future use.

Good luck with your recovery, don't worry too much about the weight loss, give it time, do not try to overeat to compensate. That will only make you ill.

Hi have you tried antihistamine. The feed might include fish oils like the one i was on is he allergic to fish. I am allergic to penicillin and get alternative antibiotics.

Speak with the dietician at the hospital or his CNS .

Hope it goes away.

Best wishes

Debbie

Hi Hogwart my husband had this op in 2017 in November he was allergic to one antibiotic he had to have but not penicillin he was given something like antihistamine got rid of rash & was lucky but he had no problem with her the jeg feed maybe from that! Did you ring the specialist that done the Ivor Lewis? Might be worth ruining him Is your husband home? Mi husband was in for almost 4 months most of that spent in ICU as he had complications right from the start but it is 19 months on & he does everything now & as he didn’t eat for 4 months say’s he loves food! Good luck with your husband & I hope you find what is causing the rash! Cheers on a speedy recovery! Regard, Sherrill Hocroft
