I've started to notice that pastry and bread is leaving me feeling excessively bloated post op. Is it possible that I could have developed gluten Intolerance since my op.

Hi get your gp to test you for celiac disease. If that comes back normal you may have developed non celiac wheat setitivity . Just cut out wheat for 2 weeks and see how you feel.

Post op I found that one of the few foods I enjoyed was French bread but realised it was making me bloated. I changed to wholemeal bread which now forms the basis of my diet during the day and I find I can digest it comfortably. I hope this helps.

A lot of people, me included, find bread difficult to digest after their oesophagectomy. In fact, it was one of the foods that I was advised to avoid for a while after my op. Twelve years later, I still cannot digest wholemeal brown bread. I find spelt bread much easier to digest.

I'm four years out from my op. I found that I can eat bread if it's baked in the traditional way using yeast, given time to rise and kneaded. A lot of commercially baked breads are baked on a rolling bake and rely on air and steam injection to make them rise. This type gives me the bloated feeling and if eaten with butter, cheese or in a bacon sandwich gives me reflux and sometimes dumping.

Hi, It takes a while for your gut to learn again and get itself sorted. I found after the op that i had problems along the way with lactose, fats pastry, deep fried foods, I have got over most of them and eat almost all apart from well cooked meat (it’s often too dry), batter on fish, prawn balls etc and fresh bread difficult to digest 9 years on. I do eat hot French baguettes as a treat and know I might suffer. But then I drink alcohol and know I might get a hangover.

I was advised to cut foods out for a while but keep trying to reinclude them as my gut was basically growing up again. I am now actually watching my weight as I am the size I was before I got ill finally and seem to be able to keep on growing!!!

Cheers Lizzy
