My GP says she is unable to prescribe Esomeprazole as its too expensive according to the NICE guidelines. That's even though the gastro consultant recommended it! (He says he's not allowed to prescribe these medications - its up to the GP!)
This medication is supposed to be good especially when others have failed. I am on maximum dose of 80gm Pantoprazole at the moment.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
Best wishes to all.

I would suggest you contact your CNS or, better still your consultant via their secretary and explain what's happened. Hope you have success. this is the last thing you need when you're dealing with cancer.
Are You in the UK? If so your hospital should have details of PALS these are the people to speak with or complain to. As for the GP as to speak with practice manager, patient relations contact number.
Especially if and when dealing with just receptionist or just the secretary of consultant, no disrespect to these people but this has been the comeback said to me! In similar situation. Don't threaten use. Use these contacts that's why they are in place so you don't have to, they are the patients middle person. Even if they only give you full explained details to why not? Or possible rethink your words and " second opinion " the first decision. Other word change the minds
I live in the south east too and have had no problem getting it on the NHS. Start by writing a formal complaint to your GP and take it further if you have to. If you look at these NICE guidelines you’ll see how low the price is. bnf.nice.org.uk/medicinal-f...
If NICE has it, your doctor can prescribe on the NHS
I am from the UK and now live in Taiwan. I have been told by all the Docs here that Esomeprazole is by far the best available drug for us on the market. I have to buy it here but fortunately it is very cheap, around GBP10/month.
I am saddened that the NHS is taking this line, having believed that we have one of the best health care systems in the world. Perhaps you could get a second opinion from another GP? I don't know but keep on trying.
I have many ongoing health issues including many digestive problems and even had HALO ablation for squamous cell dysplasia in 2012. I live in SE London but am very lucky to have a really good and helpful GP who is always happy to supply the medicines that help me most and for me to try new ones if current meds aren't keeping symptoms under control. I think your GP is being unreasonable if the stuff you are already using isn't working for you. If I were you I would consider asking to see another doctor or changing to another practice if there's no other doctor at your current surgery. Good luck. I hope you get this sorted.
My gp has recently prescribed Esomeprazole. I have tried every drug going for my hiatus hernia. I have had it for 20 years. I have only just been referred to a specialist after all this time. It has taken an age to get somewhere as I suffer daily. It is the best and strongest drug though.
80mg PPI current prescription. My speculation is your root cause is not being treated but only symptoms are being managed or attempted to be managed.
Perhaps this may be the trigger point for you to do a holistic review of what you have, how its root cause is being treated rather symptoms being managed.
