I have found it best not to eat any high carbohydrate food after 8pm. Sugar will stimulate digestive juices and it doesn’t absorb them like more bulky foods will. Somtimes I might have a mini magnum towards bedtime but even this gives me a little reflux. I generally eat an apple or crisps towards bedtime or popcorn (not high sugar butterkist). Something that will tend to absorb the gastric fluids but not stimulate them too much.

Hi There coll,

Remember we are all different with these oesophageal problems, but I suggest you shouldn't worry too much about the colour of your mucus firstly because the mucus is most likely from the lining of your throat/oesophagus (whats left) or your new style stomach, the mucus will take on the colour of what you have last eaten. Whereas if it's from a lung infection it would more likely be green.

If it's coughed up mucus no problem, but if it's regurgitation from the stomach/intestines then it can be a problem if it gets into your lungs. This is called to aspirate and is more likely with us Ivor Lewis survivors because they remove the valves in your stomach entry which would stop this from coming back up. Don't worry if eating just before bedtime suits you, as I say we are all different and it does suit me. Different people different opinions, some say if you eat late it gives your inner workings something to do whilst you are going off to sleep, whilst others won't eat later than a set time say 8 o'clock. My opinion is that if you don't have any nasty side effects do whatever suits you.

In truth even the medical professionals don't agree on such things.

The other thing in relation to this is, are you sleeping in a sitting up position? Not sleeping in a sitting up position can cause problems with regurgitation and aspirating, so it is always worth considering.

OK then good luck with it all

Richard

The Caffeine in dark chocolate is responsible for your sleep disturbance. More worrying is that the necessity of clearing mucus suggests that you are still suffering from LPR.

[It takes one to know one ...........I limit myself to just one square these days!]
