Sometimes people who have had a fundoplication procedure (top of stomach wrapped around bas of oesophagus) find they cannot burp, but this is a different situation from having had an oesophagectomy.

Trapped wind / colic can be a problem, and the trapped air has to go either up or down in the system to relive it.

Occasionally I have the same problem but a Wind Setler capsule usually sorts it out.

As far as burping I find at,,,,68 years old it takes more to achieve or happens loudly at an inoportune time. However, the air has to come out so I shift in a variety of ways. Had six decades of cola drinking skill to support this. Like burping a little one, but the little one is you!

Carbonated water triggers a burp.

Hi,

I am two years post IL and I have exactly the same problem.

When I mentioned this to my dietitian as it struck me as odd not being able to burp up your wind, she said it was very common after this sort of surgery and you just had to relearn how to do it!

I am now able to burp, I don't know if your conversant with winding babies, but that's what works for me, as daft as it sounds I can't get to rub my own back and so what I do is a gentle patting motion just above the navel with the flat palm and this will invariably result in a burp. Not the sort of thing to do in a restaurant, but I now do it wherever I am, as I feel getting rid of the wind is much more important than what people think.

Good luck with it all, and as we used to say 'Better out than in'

Regards Richard
