Implants

I've got a long list of chronic illnesses, and my health has deteriorated greatly over the last two years. I've lost teeth through a combination of Hiatus Hernia and Sjogren's Syndrome, but to cut the story short, I've been offered implants by the Dental Hospital.

Now comes the difficult part.

At first I was up for this although I have to say this procedure sounds somewhat brutal. I thought they were only interested in doing the bottom teeth, but now they're saying they want to do both, (I had all my top teeth out when I was 19), something to do with making sure everything's aligned properly. Now, bearing this in mind, I have to say I'm very prone to urine infections and already take a long-life low-dose antibiotic as I'm prone to chest infections too. Also, the slightest thing can go septic on me. They don't seem to be bothered by this, and say they will put me on antibiotics before they start the work. This all has to be done under local anesthetic - if they would put me to sleep until it was all over, I'd be fine! It's also been said that this could take a good 12 months before it was all finished. Has anyone here had implants done? How was it? Did it hurt, but was worth it? I'm really getting myself in a state about this, as I don't know which way to turn, and what decision to make. I don't know if the trauma of it will be worth it, or how it will affect my system. Can anyone help me please? Thanks in advance.

Hi Sinelg,

I have implants 4yrs ago . I had 3 fitted so I could have a four teeth bridge fitted.I did not feel any pain, first bad teeth removed ,wait 3mths then had the implants fitted they are screwed into your jaw it took about 10mins no pain felt. Then wait 3mths or so jaw bone grows round them. Then your new teeth are bolted to the implants. While you have no teeth they will tempery ones so you still have while all this goes on. All the work is done under local anesthetic so no pain at all. It does take some time to do but they make a fantastic difference and would recomend them, I have had no trouble.

Hope all goes well for you

Thank you so much for your reply, you've certainly made me feel a bit better about things. I don't think I'm too bothered about pain, etc, more the length of time it will take and the fact I get lots of infections. Thanks again x
