I forgot to add that recently I have been having slight trouble in feeling food sticking in my throat or whilst laying down feeling food coming back up into oesophagus..it feels like there is something halfway down in my chest area rather than nearer my throat..have no idea if this is relevant or not but have had difficulty in this before although don't have it all the time.

Hi

Sorry you are suffering at the moment, Itshirt awful isn't it?

I have Gord/Gerd and a sliding hiatus hernia. I usually take omeprazol 30mg once a day. However, when I have a bad attack, I double the dose, taking one in the morning and one in the evening. I also get through bottles of gaviscon advanced. I had an endoscopy a few weeks ago and the consultant said that was ok.

When I have a bad attack, I hardly eat to be honest as a feel really sick and just don't feel hungry. When I do start eating, I stick to liquids to begin with, lots of soup, yogurt etc.

Hope this helps

Judi

When you do go to your GP ,and if food is sticking in your Throat and Chest. Ensure you tell him and he will probably send you for an Endoscopy. It's nothing to worry about but it could explain your symptoms.

Hi Phil,

had an endoscopy in July this year. The Doctor doing it muttered about Barretts Oesophagus and then told the nurse that I'd probably not remember it ( I was awake and alert) and to "give her a leaflet"..!

I duly received said leaflet, went home and googled it all and then found this site. My GP was less than forthcoming, seemed confused about doubling up the meds and all in all it felt like a disaster.

The food sticking thing is fairly new, certainly its rarely happening but seems to have happened more now after the endoscope and meds ( no idea )

I also wondered if I should take the PPI in the morning or night ( again,no help from disinterested GP) I have Gaviston by my bed along with Rennies etc .

These last couple of days have been unpleasant. I have "fumes" coming up that burn my mouth and throat. When I get the acid attack it causes such burning pain even in my ears and I always seem to inhale it too leaving my lungs sounding terribly wet and painful.

Will start just taking one a day and think if it gets worse will increase again to two.

Thank you both for your replies.

There is information about Barrett's on actionagainstheartburn.org.uk

It is important to take PPIs at the right time. I think that the advice is to take them in the morning half an hour or more before you start eating for them to be most effective, but do read the patient information leaflet that comes with your particular medication about this.

There is usually an underlying cause for the reflux (eg a hiatus hernia, stomach ulcer etc etc) and the normal approach is to take the PPIs (like Omeprazole) and then see whether the cause has resolved itself because the system has less irritating acid to enable healing.

Your GP should be able to gain access to the endoscopist's report.

Taking a PPI does create a better environment for Barrett's to stop it getting worse. There is good advice available from Barrett's Wessex sites.google.com/site/barre...

If this unpleasant feeling persists go back to the doctor. It might be that you need a different medication and this is a side effect. It is feasible that you are suffering from bile reflux, which is alkali and not acid, so PPI medication does not counteract it.

Gaviscon Advance should work against either acid or alkali, but only for a few hours at best.

If you have Barrett's it is important that you are placed into a monitoring system according to your individual risk, and that you are checked in relation to possible dysplasia developing.

Food sticking is a 'red light' symptom that should result in your being referred for an endoscopy on an urgent basis. It could be a number of things, not necessarily cancer, but you do have to get it checked out properly.

In relation to the night time reflux, try sleeping with your head raised higher, either with pillows, the head of the bed raised, or something under the mattress. Gaviscon can help at night as well.

I have raised the bed via books and also invested in a wedge pillow ( which I find very difficult not to slip off) The sticking thing seems to come and go as does the reguritation of undigested food..sometimes it arrives back up after 12 or more hours and often in the same form.

The endoscope was 1st July so maybe too early for further scopes? I have been scheduled for another in two yrs and the colonoscopy in one yr. I think one of my main problems is the almost complete disinterest by my GP. She became very confused trying to interpret the scope results, and then by the endoscopic Drs advice to increase the Lansoprazole to twice a day...she looked flustered and ask me was that 2x 30 mg or was it 2x 15mg...

To be honest she was slightly more concerned than the consultant I saw at the hospital who asked me what tests did I want! I replied he was the doctor so surely up to him! He also asked did I want to see him again...and again I replied it was up to him...and although the scope report said refer back to consultant I have received nothing from the dept and this is nearly two months on..

Thank you for your reply.

Minnie ,I don't know but I wonder if you might be having bile ( as well or instead ) coming up ?

We're all different but bile tends to be up another level of agony than acid .It's worse as far as I'm concerned and affects my lungs .

Thank you ...think you might be right here..when an attack happens my entire throat, ears, mouth ,tongue and lungs seems like someone has poured boiling oil down them...it lasts a long long time and the lung problem is awful..I asked the GP for an inhaler as know I have infections ( or at least some kind of dreadful bubbling noises plus a lot of pain)

I can also just have very hot fume like episodes where my mouth and gums feel like they are on fire..

Can't tell you how sick I am of myself but glad to have found this site.
