Hi are we now hyperglycaemic or diabe... - Oesophageal & Gas...
Hi are we now hyperglycaemic or diabetic due to the type of operation we have had, mine is post op January 2012 chemo before operation.
Hiya - I've had lots of problems with sugar side effects and was sent to see a diabetic nurse because of their experience with sugar levels.
We're in a weird camp of not being diabetic as we can still produce / detect insulin in our bodies but we are now hypogylcaemic (or so my diabetic nurse told me) I now carry a blood sugar tester kit, a pack of mini jelly babies and a pack of mini digestives with me in case I have a low blood sugar moment.
It might be handy to speak to your GP about seeing a specialist nurse like I have not only to get a meter so you can keep an eye on your levels but also to learn what those levels mean.
I've personally found it very handy because if I start to feel a bit funny then I can do a quick check of my blood and it'll tell me if its a sugar thing or just another of the miriad of symptoms I get after my op!
Hope that helps
There are some useful fact sheets on the " library " part of the OPA site .

which might help ...
Personally I've found it important not to let myself have an empty stomach as it's when I eat when I'm really empty ,especially if I eat carbs/sugary stuff ,that I get late dumping .
So I'm always nibbling and sucking hard boiled sweets .
My poor teeth ,but that's another story ...
What are the symptoms? There have been a few times where I had cold sweats and shakes that I've never had prior to the Ivor Lewis procedure in December of 2013.
Spanner16 reply strikes me - judged by my similar experience - as spot on. These episodes can be v unpleasant but are readily dealt with (Lucozade and biscuits do the trick for me). It's frustrating, but there seems to be no pattern to my attacks in terms of what triggers them. What blood sugar tester kit would Spanner16 recommend?
