A Taste of Yorkshire! - For those who may worry about eating out

Here is an interesting opportunity for anybody who might have given up on the thought of ever eating out as you used to. It is an initiative organised by the Leeds branch of the OPA with catering students who are keen to refine their skills at dealing with people who have special dietary needs.

“Taste of Yorkshire” Lunch at Doncaster College Training Restaurant

Time: 1:00 for 1:30 pm

Date: Tuesday 11 June 2013

Venue: Training Restaurant, Doncaster College

Address:

The Hub, Chappell Drive, Doncaster, DN1 2RF

Link to Doncaster College Website contact page:

don.ac.uk/about__college/co...

There are substantial public parking facilities adjacent to the College.

The menu has been designed by the students in response to the dietary needs of members from their studies of OPA and MacMillan literature.

Although there are six courses it is a taster menu and the portions are modest in size. The price is £10 per person payable on the day.

This is not just for patients, friends and family are welcome too.

Please indicate your wish to attend by email to Mrs Sol Taylor, secretary of the Leeds OPA branch, at sol@soltaylor.net or by telephone on 07759735552.

Cut-off date for tickets: June 8th.

Apologies for the short notice but we are restricted by the examination timetable of the students involved.

It promises to be an interesting and most enjoyable occasion and I hope you will be able to come. The menu for this imaginative event is attached.

What a very thoughtful concept. It is a shame that I can't get over there to take part. I like the sound of the Yorkshire Tea Sorbet!! I have found that I have become very nervous and conservative with my diet so I welcome such initiatives. It would be very interesting to get some feedback. I hope it goes well.

I hope other colleges might take part, in different parts of the country. I love my food, and would try anything.

We cannot see the photos, but this was announced as the result:

Leeds OPA eat in style

at the Waterfront Restaurant, Doncaster College

Margaret and Derek Barnett members of the Leeds Regional Branch of the Oesophageal Patients Association (OPA) are served a Yorkshire Tea sorbet, one of six courses of a sumptuous meal prepared and served by students of Doncaster College.

John Taylor, member of the Leeds OPA, who was a former Principal of the College, conceived the idea of the event. John was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer shortly after his retirement and underwent an oesophagectomy in October 2010.

John briefed the student chefs and front of house staff beforehand on the nature of the disease and the dietary implications of the surgery and they responded magnificently to the challenge producing a high quality imaginative taster menu with a Yorkshire theme. Each course was delicious and the sympathetic pace of service was much appreciated by the 24 members present.

Some of the students had just returned from Spain working in Michelin star restaurants and this was reflected in the quality and success of the event.

Members applauded the student chefs and waiters for their hard work.

This event may be of interest to other regions and John (leeds@opa.org) is available to give advice to any Group who wishes to arrange a similar event in their area.
