Hi

I had a esophagectomy with the removal of most of my stomach in August 2012, would i be able to have a glass of wine occasionally or am i not allowed any alcohol? sorry to ask but as i dont normally drink i didn't think to ask my doctors. I was asked if i would like a glass by a friend and i wasn't sure if i should or not!

Hi Marg

After surgery and still now to some extent I don't have much of an appertite. My surgeon suggsted I had a glass of sherry before my dinner to try and increase my digestive juices. I tried it but found sherry on an empty stomach wasn't a good idea. I do now occasionally have a glass of red wine about an hour after eating, but I often find it too acidic. Also goes to my head much quicker,

But I think after what we have been through we shouldn't deny ourselves anything, just all in moderation ;-)

Love

I asked my surgeon if i could drink alcohol and he said fine. he said there is no connection between alcohol and barretts or stomach cancer. I have read a book on ardenocarcinoma of the stomach and it stated that there was no proven connection. However, my father was a heavy drinker and died of cancer of the oesophagus.

Like everything in life, moderation. And ask your owner doctor and surgeon for their advise.

I had a merendino interposition 18 months ago and drink about 4-5 small glasses of white wine per week and suffer no obvious side effects. Red wine however does and did before the op make me cough.. I only drink red occasionally. I would suggest with food is best and not on an empty stomach.

Some people think it is compulsory!

If you like it and you have no ill effects go for it!

I recommend sherry.Yes its ok to have a tipple but of course in moderation.

I confess to struggling with Tequila Slammers but otherwise everything goes.

I have been following this advice for 22 years post-op so draw your own conclusions !
