I always have to make up the time for med appointments, might be different in U.K. Its a given in modern workplace. If you were having a surgical procedure, they will give you the time. I remember years ago, we were given time off for docs and dentists etc, but now I think its down to the individual employer.

I work for the great NHS and I have to take accrued time ie from weekend rota working(no we dont get paid as such for weekends!) and use this for appointments... I work part time so appointments which i can control are made after i finish work but rheum appointments etc are always during the working day..

I don't think that's right!!!! Are we not covered under the Disability Act???RA is in it so I think we can take hospital appointments when needed??/ Gonna go check!!

Hi please contact NRAS and get hold off copies off the books I want to work and when an employee has RA, they are free off charge.

They will tell you all you need to know, but you have a lot more rights with a disability and yes RA is classed as a disablilty.

Your employer should make resonable adjustments, this includes allowing you to change your hours, work less hours, start later if you need more time in a morning due to stiffness even fitting stair lifts and making doors lighter to open come under the resonable adjustments.

Dont let your employers make working a problem for you, Ive spoken to too many people who have given up work becuase there empoyers havent helped them out, mine have been fantastic and I can come and go as I please, I start late on the days my stiffness is worse, I have days off or nip out off work when I have appointments, I have days off when having a bad day but best off all they have addapted my work station to be a lot comfier and a lot less painfull on my wrists etc.

Take care and dont be bullied find out your rights xx

Hi, my employers, the AA are also very good. I do not need to make time up for appointments and have made my work area much better. I feel like I really let them down when I take time off sick as a result. I know that RA sickness can not be used against me in disciplinary and that due to the disability act I dont have to make the appointment time up.

yes my employers or rather my immediate department seem a little" misinformed")?.. unfortunately even the Nras brochure says" you have no automatic right to time off for appointments , but most employers are accomodating"!.. my boss said if I ever get a ten min appoint yeh right! I can get away without making up the time!... just waiting to see the rheumatologist is an hour!
