Sulfasalazine suspoension from a newbie!

I have been taking Sulfasalazine in suspension for some time because I find swallowing the 500Hmg tablets very difficult. The suspension is now out of stock from Rosemont and my pharmacist has had to ask my GP to prescribe the tablets. Has anyone had to make this change and how have you managed to swallow the tablets (which cannot be cut into or chewed due to enteric coating). Any help or information about when the suspension will be available again would be most welcome. Thank you in advance.

Glad to hear that Jimbo64. I don't have problems with the drug, just the swallowing of the tablets hence the change to suspension which is now out of stock...

I’m really sorry but don’t really have any useful advice. I do take Sulfasalazine myself and the tablets are huge but I just take them with lots of water. Just wondering if you would find it easier taking them with a spoonful of yoghurt or something? I am really strange with tablets and if taking things like paracetamol I prefer the capsules rather than tablets but thankfully have managed to take my six Sulphasalzine tablets with no issue.

Thanks Summerrain14 I will certainly try the yoghurt tip - I can imagine it makes the tablet smoother to swallow. Like you, I prefer the capsule Paracetamol but, sadly, Sulfasalazine is not produced in this form. It is very kind of you to take the time to reply to me. I really appreciate your kindness.

Hi tangolil. Welcome to the forum. I don’t take Sulfasalazine myself, but through a quick Google search, I found some info which suggests that there are some non-enteric coated tablets out there which could be halved, or even crushed? I am not sure how to make a link to the document from here, so I have copy and pasted the website address below. Hopefully if you copy and paste into your web browser, you should be able to find it? Also read something which suggests suspension should be back in stock in August. Hope that helps.

Thank you Moneysmum - that is so kind of you and I will certainly research the non-enteric tablets you found and ask my GP if they are suitable for me to take.

Yes, I too heard that the Suspension may be back in August so I am hoping to resume preferred option then. Fingers crossed, eh?

You have been a great help. Stay well.
