When we should stop taking Methotrexate?
When our rheumatologist thinks that the remission is sufficiently stable to try dropping down doses.
For some people this can happen quite quickly and they stay in remission without it. For others it never happens. I've being trying to reduce drugs for the last 4 years, but so far I flare again.. maybe one day......
I've dropped to 5mg a week since starting Biologics, but haven't dared to stop completely.
It truly is an individual thing. I stopped MTX and my body does not react or flare but the same is not true for everyone. Let your doctor know how you feel about it. I try not to take it because it affects my liver. I also realize that things change continuously. I think it is best to be prepared. Even when a drug regime works for you eventually it stops working and the search begins again. I have recently met two women who , unfortunately, did not have access to MTX , the extreme deformities were incentive. That is why it is scene as a miracle drug. If the side effects are bad injections are used to reduce or eliminate those side effects.
Are you asking about being sick? I was always told to stop it when I had a fever... If you asking about after remission, I don't know that you ever just drop it without your doc being involved, and then I understand it is incremental (just reducing doses and or frequency). you don't want to go through all of this just to restart it again...
I stopped taking mtx because of feeling very unwell, took it for about 7 years and haven't actually noticed a difference, wish I stopped taking it sooner
Hi Jillyanne, I found your post about stopping mtx 6 months ago. Are you still off it? How are you doing.. ? I just stopped and praying I stay in remission.
