Could it be sciatica too ?

Whereabouts on your hips does it hurt? I have the same problem affecting the widest bony parts of my hips and my GP said it was trochanteric bursitis which seems to make sense.

hello deejojo, I have had r/a for 44 years, and despite all the hard drugs, have just been getting hip pain, felt mostly in the buttocks, I have gotten some relief from sitting on a heat pad. all my other joints are burnt out, but I do have replacement knees. thank god. hope you get some relief as this is awful. regards bluetit 33

Well, I had my knees xrayed because they were swollen and painful but there was nothing to see. However, they're counted in the list of joints affected by the disease - so my conclusion is that 'nothing to see' means there's nothing else going on in the joint that could cause the symptoms (rather than there's no reason for the symptoms)

It's actually hurting more when I walk x

It could be a number of things. My advice is don't give up. Keep pushing for investigations and doctors appointments. I had an intense pain in my groin in the summer. I was sure it was my left hip but X-ray and ultrasound scan of my hip was inconclusive. After rest and painkillers it settled only to flare again. Turned out it was my back. 5 months of physio and twice daily exercises and it's much better. Your pain could be bursitis but if it's worse when you walk I would guess it's either your back or your hip. You need an MRI. Have you had a lot of steroids? My sister has a hip problem called anacular necrosis caused by too much pred. She has a lot of pain but they say it's not bad enough for surgery yet. We both have RA.

I wonder if it could be to do with my back as I had a slipped disc a year ago. Ur still suffering on and off with that having injections 2week today in spine I'm dreading it I've not had any steroid injections yet Hun the pain in my hip just started again last week last time I had an X-ray it didn't show anything so wondering why it. Has come back ??? It's niggling me now sat here on sofa very odd xxx

Hi ,

I have had hip pain since my left knee replacement 18 months ago, told initially it was bursitis (mine also hurt more when in bed at night) I had a steroid injection into the site of the pain which unfortunately did not help. In time it has eased and I also take regular Gabapentin now to help.

Best of luck

My rheumy told me my hip pain was caused by the way I walked due to my knee pain and referred me to a physiotherapist. I've found sleeping on a soft mattress or memory foam helps. XXX

I have pain in my right hip and discovered the cause is RA nodules in the groin area. I to had x-rays and MRI scans of the hip and nothing showed up.

Sleeping on my back with a pillow under my bottom helps to ease the pain.

I use a walking stick to help ease the pain. It was recommended by the phyisotherapist.

I hope you get some ease from your pain.

I've had terrible pain in my left hip for years..x-ray showed nothing. Waiting for mri results...I've had two injections but that didn't help at all..what on Earth could it be??? Everyone is at a loss..Doc mentioned fibromalagia a couple of years ago, but nothing was done....I just want the pain to go away..for good. Any ideas or similar experience??
