Its not the tax disc that counts, its the blue badge for getting disabled parking

You need a blue badge to park in a disabled bay, but will have to pay. If you also have a tax disc which displays zero tax paid this will entitle you to park in the disabled bay for free. To qualify for a tax exempt vehicle you must be in receipt of the highest rate in mobility for the DLA award.

I can answer this with confidence as I have both the Blue Badge and the zero rated tax disc.

In our area you get free parking in council car parks only if you have Disabled tax disc as well as your blue badge

You should still have a blue badge if you qualify for mobility car plus it is meant to be computerised, I think it is about time they got rid of the disc.

We have parked in some disabled parking spaces where it is only free if you have tax free car tax disc, not just because you have a blue badge

I have sent an email to my council (Cornwall) about this I will report back when and if I get a reply of course :-)

Tax free disc relates to customs and excise status of the use of a vehicle on a road. Tax discs are being phased out soon.

Blue badge relates to the passenger carried in or driver of a vehicles entitlement to use a marked disabled parking space, however this is under the terms and conditions indicated and enforced by the car park operator in the case of a private (including hospital)car park, ie some are free or reduced and others subject to time limits etc or other conditions. if they say you have to wear Mickey Mouse ears while using the parking space than thats that, you have to. It is their car park and unless the number of disabled parking spaces provided and their terms of use was specified at the time planning permission was granted by the local authority as a condition of granting (as it was in my flats) they not only dont have to provide them they can dictate the use of them how they wish.

Wouldnt you just love to have a condition of parking for non disabled parkers who use disabled parking spaces that they have to wear Mickey Mouse ears for a week in public! Oh how it would improve my day!

Have a good weekend. Leon.

What a brilliant idea! Also those that park on yellow lines. I try not to even though I have a blue badge.

Nobody has yet grasped what I am asking , in car parks in Cornwall free parking is only available if as well as your blue badge you have a nil or disabled tax disc so what happens when the disc is no longer issued how do you prove you are entitled to free parking?

in reply to RayinBude

Hi Ray, do you mean no one on here is grasping what you're saying or the Council? I noticed that you said you've sent them a email so hopefully they will be able to tell you. I don't have a blue badge so totally unable to help but can grasp what you're saying and think it's something that you need to contact your local council about( which you've done) or the DVLA. Good luck :)

H I Ray, I entirely grasp what your saying and you have already asked by email the only people who can answer your question. I did try and explain in my reply that the owner of the car park in your case the council can set any rules they like for parking disabled or otherwise, however the LEGAL requirement is that you display a blue badge and that it is used by the badge holder only within the conditions of its issue. But if your council decide that they have another requirement ie in this case a nil charge tax disc only they can change it and only they can tell you why in gods name they have the rule in the first place. There are thousands of people who have a blue badge but dont have a car never mind a nil tax disc. I would be furious if I lived there and you should quite rightly demand a reply and go as high up as you need to so that it is changed. Sometimes its only by someone taking a stand and a bit of David and Goliath that you get things changed. If you dont get it changed I would write them a letter telling them that when your tax disc expires they will be preventing you from parking and that will be discrimination and send a letter to your local paper, also the, other person to involve is your local MP, go along to the surgery that they are obliged to hold and tell them you want them to get it sorted. Good luck mate. Leon.

Also I have just realised your post relates to "free parking" not wether or not you can actually use the disabled space. It is entirely up to the council who they give free parking to and on what terms, but morally a parking discretion would be nice as some people with disabilities do not have the choice to use public transport.

in the area I live there is no free parking for disabled users in any pay car parks not even at the hospital where the minimum payment is I believe 2.70.

good luck. Leon.

I have been wondering about this too. We have car parks in Hampshire and Dorset that are free to free car tax people. I would love to know when you find out. Presumably there is some sort of system for these people.

I have a blue badge if my son uses his car to take me out it is registered with full paid tax disc I am entitled to stranded mobility so I get part of my tax paid I did not think the tax disc was relevant but the disabled person entitlement to the blue badge was all that was required it dose not mention the tax disc in the information booklet on blue badge requirements confused now
