Other diagnoses
Hi! I feel you. My 7 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD (all 3 presentations) earlier this year after a lengthy psych evaluation. I've expected this diagnosis for about the last 3-4 years. It was clear to me! He was also diagnosed with PTSD, which usually only presents itself in medical settings. His teachers don't ever see any of those types of symptoms at school! He has some sensory issues, but not enough to diagnose Sensory Processing Disorder. I can relate to your comment re: kidney stuff seeming the most straightforward! I know exactly what he needs to keep his kidney healthy post-transplant and can check off those boxes for meds and hydration, no problem! But the emotional, mental, behavioral rollercoaster associated with his ADHD is exhausting (probably for him just as much as me!).
My son was diagnosed with Legg Calve Perthes 2 years ago, it is a rare bone disorder affecting the top of the femor and the hips. It's bilateral, so they think it was caused by complications due to his kidney disease. He also has bladder dysfunction due to the birth defect that caused his kidney disease.
Yes, my son has severe combined ADHD, neurocognitive deficits, possibly autism, learning disbilities, generalized anxiety disorder, sensory processing disorder, various delays, and borderline intellectual functioning. Yes, I feel like the renal failure/transplant and other various medical diagnoses are more straightforward - there are labs and EKGs and ultrasounds to measure status. It's objective, whereas the other things are pretty subjective. There's no imaging or lab work to picture progress or status.
Yes, I also find that there is less agreement among providers about how to proceed. We have some recommending ADHD meds while others telling us to stay away. Between her frequent illnesses causing absences and her learning disability, school has been a tough nut to crack for us.
We actually homeschool, so that makes education a bit easier, IMO.
My daughter has Dyslexia. She went through the dyslexia program at her school, which is a two year program designed by a hospital and that has really helped her. She does have accomadations at school for tests and projects but she is doing great in school considering all the obstacles she has been through.
Yes, my son has developmental delay due to being premature. And is in stage 3 CkD
My daughter has adhd also. Also She would miss a lot of school and feel overwhelmed being behind.
