COVID VACCINE MANDATE

My ex husband is in need of a kidney. He has been evaluated at 2 separate centers but they refuse to list him unless he gets the COVID vaccine. This seems an unreasonable requirement since the long term effects of the vaccine are unknown in kidney transplant patients. He will be looking into other transplant centers that do not require the COVID vaccine. Has anyone else encountered this?

Hi not sure if this answers your question but while I was being assessed to go on the waiting list the nurse told me that if you aren't vaccinated and contract covid and you have a transplant, then you are 50% chance of dying from the virus. It probably has something to do with anti rejection meds lowering your immune system ( don't anyone rant If I'm wrong plz)

You have a harder time fighting things off, therefore the covid vaccine can provide you with some protection.

You may need to speak to the team in depth about this.

Maybe the renal team think unless you are vaccination , they will be wasting a kidney if there's a chance that you could die after transplant , if you catch covid. (just a thought)

For me I was so anxious waiting for a donor and incredibly grateful and humbled after recently receiving my transplant that not having the vaccine to me is unthinkable.

If he doesn't get vaccination and no one will perform a transplant without it, think about how he would feel spending a lifetime on dialysis.

My personal opinion, I know everyone has theirs too.

Hope he gets some answers soon x

Thanks for your insight. I can see both sides. Congrats on your recent transplant! How are you feeling?

Sorry only just seen this. It's 8 weeks since my transplant and I feel really good. Couldn't put my finger on why I was feeling tired and clammy amongst other things on a morning but it's my BP it's low so after chatting to the doctor that's now been altered. I still have 3 weeks b4 I can start back at work because of the high immune suppression meds as I'm face to face with lots of clients my immune system is virtually none existent, until they drop the meds down. But I feel really good thankyou. Just need to get my fitness up again as my gfr went to 6 I couldn't be bothered going to the gym. I still worked full time up to transplant though and was extremely lucky to not have to start dialysis. X
