They are saying I have diverticulitis and i am just wondering and I know this is probably TMI but does anyone after eating have diarrhea within 30 min or right away. I am just wondering because just because doctors say this does not mean that’s what it is. Can anyone give me any advice I think I’m going to do all broth diet and a few scoops of Peanut butter for 2 days. So many different GI issues it’s just had to say!

Hi, I have many of these issues and they are so hard to manage and diagnose. I do not have diverticulitis (thank goodness) but many symptoms of what they’ve labeled irritable bowel disease. I think following a BRAT diet (tailored to kidney disease) for a week will rest your gut then you can slowly start over. Just be care with diverticulitis. It can be very painful so stay away from seeds, etc.
I started taking floraster and eating yogurt and that helps a little. I also take lomotil pro-actively which seems to help.
Thank you so much ! I feel like I have a bit of IBS not really diverticulitis honestly. I have heard of the brat Diet. Can I ask what you do for the brat diet tailored to the kidneys?
Dan,Do you have kidney disease? Constant diarrhea could be a sign of a couple of things, including diabetes, IBS and even elevated toxins from CKD. It is often not talked about because it can feel embarrassing. However, constant diarrhea can dehydrate you extremely fast. So speak up if this last more than a couple of days. The doctor can run a few tests to see the cause.
Diverticulitis is an impaction of the bowel, or the diverticula. This usually does not cause diarrhea like you describe, but just the opposite. However, an infection from diverticulitis is a pretty serious issue and so if you are prone to it and having bowel issues, speak to your doctor. Leaving it untreated can result in having to have surgery.
BTW, peanut butter is not a good solution. The broth yes. But again, it depends on what other issues, CKD or diabetes you have.
And yes, I have had many years of diverticulitis, including two situations where I was hospitalized. I manage with diet. The major cause of diverticulitis is not from high fiber. Matter of fact they are now saying it is preventive. The main reason is from pushing too hard. How's that for TMI,
Yes I am both Ckd stage 3 and a diabetic with a A1C of under 7 which I have worked hard for in my diet. IBS or Lactose intolerance is what I am leaning more towards although I’m not a doctor . I agree about the diverticulitis.
Merry Christmas to you also! I have had GI issues for years. I always blamed my diarrhea on my kidney transplant meds. Then I thought maybe I had irritable bowel. I tried to not eat much for lunch or I would be spending time in the bathroom. Eating something sweet...NO! Then during the pandemic I started running a fever. I went 4 months with feeling like "crap." Then my PCP saw me in person, no more "telehealth" appt. Had a gall bladder test where they inject you with a hormone. I reacted violently to it. Gall bladder surgery July 23rd. Who knew that my gall bladder could cause so many problems. Mine was enlarged and inflamed and backing up into my liver. I am a "normal" person now. No more diarrhea.
I guess I am trying to tell you that diarrhea can be caused by many things. I think it is real easy for a doctor to say you have diverticulitis or irritable bowel. Did they do tests to prove it? I know they can see if you have diverticulitis when they do a colonoscopy. I think as we age, almost everyone gets some diverticula, but it doesn't usually cause any problems unless it gets infected or inflamed. I have that, but that was not the cause of my diarrhea.
So, I feel for you. I have been there -and sure hope they can find the real cause of your diarrhea. Have you seen a GI doctor?
Thank you so much for your response. Yes I have. I am just starting to think it’s not Diverticulitis. I go for weeks and then it happens again. Maybe it’s the sweets not that I eat a lot of them but sometimes it all such a guessing game I’m trying to track everything I eat. From IBS , to Lactose intolerance to all the GI issues. I was at first blaming my BP medicine Lorsortan
I know I blamed Lactose intolerance , since I am + for that. But now I can eat cheese with no problems. Maybe you need to have an appt. with your PCP and ask him to help sort all of this out. I too would maybe go a week and then have problems. It was always at a "bad" time, if you know what I mean.
Two weeks ago I ended up in the ER with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and rectal bleeding. The provisional diagnosis after the CT with contrast was colitis and diverticulitis. I just finished with two antibiotics and the two pain killers got me through the first few days. I'm better now but the colonoscopy isn't scheduled until January to allow my gut to recover. Also, I'm even more anemic now due to blood loss. Short story: follow-up with your GI specialist.
