Sounds like you are describing a marketing tactic of 'creating a need where none exist'. My personal favorite is when they put on a product that it's 'new and improved'. Okay, which is it? 
Meaning I will take the shiny new words that are fed to me and give them a chuckle with little consideration 😉
Yes, the older that I get, the more cynical I am, especially when it comes to their mumbo jumbo that comes with peddling their products!
