Don't look sick

I hate when people judge you by how you look. I parked in an handicapped parking spot and walked to the back of my car. Before I could even get my walker out a man pulled up behind me and yelled at me saying that I was abusing the parking lot and he could tell that I'm not handicapped by looking at me. I bent down at his window and said how do you know I'm not sick? I could have cancer, a neurological disorder, or I could have an incurable and highly contagious disease in which you are now exposed to and might have. He squealed his tires just to get out of the parking space. Probably going to see if he has an imaginary disease. This momma is full of sass and ain't taking crap.

This has only happened to me once. I had my legally blind friend with me. My comeback was "I have MS and she is blind!" People are so much into appearances. Even in the Drs office, I hear -you look healthy. people think it is a compliment in that case.

I agree with you, Glad that you let him have it good. I have also had people to say to me you do not look sick and I let them have it by saying that a person can have invisiable sickness that you cannot see, and I tell them please do not judge me by how I look. I then say some day I will ask you the same thing, why do you not look sick. I'am waiting my chance to say it.

Oh my...you’re brave, mbrooks20! I have not had that happen to me yet...but I agree, sometimes people need a wake up call. Sometimes I feel agitated that I even need to park there, and I may even have a look like “don’t even think of looking at me sideways!” Most of the time tho, I just have a smile, mainly because I love being outdoors. However, we do find that the handicap parking spot is oftentimes abused by people who just shouldn’t be there. And that is not only sad, but shameful, imo. 🌞🌻

The reply I had ready before I needed a walker was to say "That's fine, if you really want my disabled parking permit you can have it, but you need to have the MS that goes with it". I never actually had to say it, but was "armed and ready to fire".

Check out this site and spread the new message around - their catch phrase really nails it. And the video clips on disabled parking are spot on.

I often feel sheepish when I use my handicap parking hang tag (for this very reason). My boyfriend feels the need to (fake) limp when we leave the car when it’s parked in a handicapped spot.

Just one of the many challenges to not “looking sick”.

I respond with, "What does someone with MS look like, and you don't look stupid."

I've had people look at me funny when I go shopping & park in handicap space, I have a permanent license plate that shows handicap but people don't care. I've also had people tell me that I don't look like I have MS cuz I'm not in a wheelchair. I always tell them thank you for the compliment.
